Re: Your Weather Data can make a difference!

Jason, I'm no expert, but I can't really see how this project can work. For a start, the trouble with amateur stations is just that - they ARE Amateur, and you can see from many of the posts on this forum that without modification, many cheaper stations don't give reliable information. For myself, ...

Re: Your Weather Data can make a difference!

I don't decry anyone engaging in a hobby and enjoying it. I do it too, though I have disconnected my wind gear to use the pole for something else. My comments are directed at the idea that a bunch of amateur weather enthusiasts can as the thread title suggests, 'make a difference' in the study of cl...

Re: Your Weather Data can make a difference!

Actually Ray, it isn't true that, 'Only each of us can decide if our data is accurate enough.' There is such a thing as objective truth. It is not a matter of opinion, and whether or not your data is beyond reproach, isn't the issue anyway; the group accepts anybody who applies. Proper weather data ...

Re: Your Weather Data can make a difference!

In my opinion, unaudited data is worthless for anything serious, especially purporting to create an archive for the study of climate change. Serious climatologists go to considerable lengths to calibrate and monitor the quality of their data. Most fans of automatic weather stations take scant measur...

Re: Strange Rainfall Readings

On the RF interference question, I have recently started up my old Ham Radio hobby again, and the end of the HF antenna is about five feet from my weather station transmitter unit and rainfall gauge. For about two weeks I have been blasting this with 100 watts of RF from five feet away, and touch wo...

Re: Battery life

All true Gina.

You should phone Brown and Cameron and offer to become a coalition Prime Minister. We might get some sense then.

Re: Humidty reading very low - wires swapped?

I agree with Belejuice. It is pointless putting in random correction factors. What is the point of collecting data that is more or less just made up?

Re: Humidty reading very low - wires swapped?

I think if your humidity is so much different to other reliable local stations you certainly have got an issue. Gina is right for sure. It's quite a leap to jump from 3v to 4.5, and also the typical wall wart things are not that tightly regulated, so it might actually be higher in such a low current...

Re: Humidty reading very low - wires swapped?

Ah right thanks. In that case I gather I can force a flat +20% on the readings in Cumulus to get it closer to reality...? I think I'd want to check other local readings before doing that. As the season goes on, I wouldn't be the least surprised if humidity changed. I'm no meteorologist, but it is m...

Re: Lost Sensor Contact!!

Hi Christer. I doubt that. The problem is usually due to battery voltage in the outside unit dropping off, especially in cold conditions, when the natural tendency of many types of battery is to drop the voltage. If it was firmware related, why would mine work perfectly from feb 2010 until now, exce...

Re: Lost Sensor Contact!!

I grabbed a little time to knock up a dual receiver using two ferrite rod aerials and the LW coils. The circuit does not have a tuning capacitor, with the coils connected directly to point-contact diodes feeding the two (stereo) microphone inputs, and a 680K load resistor in each channel. The circu...

You got quite a pulse at around ten past nine this morning Gina. Rather out of the blue, that one.

Re: Lost Sensor Contact!!

Although there was a small blip on the temperature plot about an hour and a half ago, there was nothing showing on the recording anywhere near that time. Maybe I'll have more success with ferrite rod aerials - hopefully! I suspect that if nothing is showing with a long wire antenna, you don't have ...

Good luck. I might have another project for you when you put this one to bed.
