Who's got the oldest working Fine Offset station?
I am trying to get an idea how long I can expect the Fine Offset weather station we use at our sailing club to last. I think the most likely things to fail are the bearings on the anemometer and wind vane. Also the plastic bodies and parts of the external sensors may suffer uv degradation and get br...

Re: Running two Fine Offset stations in close proximity
I take the point that there is no communication from base to remote, but they could still pair. If the remote creates a random code when it is fired up then the base station, when it is turned on, could remember the code of the first remote station transmission it receives and in future only respond...

Re: Running two Fine Offset stations in close proximity
Thanks Gina. I'll store that info away for future reference. I'm quite impressed that Fine Offset have built that feature in. It must mean that either each remote unit has a unique preset code or that the remote negotiates a code with the base station and remembers it. Or it might be they negotiate ...

Running two Fine Offset stations in close proximity
Does anyone know if you can run two Fine Offset stations close together - i.e. within wireless range? Do the remote unit and the base station pair in some way? (I realise that even if it was possible I would still need to couple them to different PCs.) The reason I ask is that at my sailing club it ...

Re: Does AvgSpeedMinutes=N affext the peak gust interval
Thanks - I think 10 min is a pretty good choice for that and I wouldn't want to change it.

Does AvgSpeedMinutes=N affext the peak gust interval
Could I just double check. If I set AvgSpeedMinutes=2 I am assuming the peak gust is still calculated over the default 10 minutes? Is that right?

Re: zoomed graph also affects graphs web page
OK - Sorry, should have read the help file more carefully. However still a bit puzzled. Surely the graphs files are regenerated using the current data every time they are uploaded - can't quite see why the udate could not just ignore any zooming settings. I'm not asking for any changes though - now ...

Re: Low measured wind speeds in a wooded urban area
Some more figures now that the wind is due south so not affected by the house. Davis 12 mph FO (using 'gust') 13 mph FO (using 48-second speed) 9 mph Steve - have you corrected for the height difference in those figures? How big is that correction anyway? Gina has said earlier in this topic that ev...

zoomed graph also affects graphs web page
Just noticed that if I zoom in on a graph on the graphs display and close that with the graph still zoomed then that propagates through to the trends web page. That means that not only is the graph zoomed on the trends web page but also that it does not update. This applies to the wind speed graph -...

Re: Low measured wind speeds in a wooded urban area
I'll take some more readings when the wind swings around to the north so it's not affected by the house, and also try to allow for the fact that the FO anemometer is lower than the Davis (but there's not a great deal of difference, maybe a metre). That would be interesting. I notice in a an earlier...

Re: What the Latest, Gust, Average and PeakGust wind speeds
I had an email yesterday from someone who says he asked Fine Offset about its wind measurements and how they work, and got the following answer. As we're already led to believe, it makes 24 2-second samples over the 48 second measuring period, and the highest of these it reports as 'gust'. It then ...

Re: What speeds does the #wspddata webtag give?
I think most of the fine print is about whether or not you report a gust value or not. Cumulus doesn't have that option for any weather station and I wouldn't want it to. The only way the Fine Offset is different is that it uses a 2 s averaging period rather than the "official" 3 s. My poi...

Re: What speeds does the #wspddata webtag give?
It contains the individual (non-averaged) wind speed readings (the 'latest' values), which for the Fine Offset station happen to be what the station calls 'gust'. Well it isn't just what the station calls 'gust'. They are actually the gust values. i.e. the maximum 2 s value over the 48 s. It isn't ...

Re: Low measured wind speeds in a wooded urban area
Height makes a big difference. I found raising my wind sensors from about 5m above ground to about 6.3m was a big improvement. We have trees around but not as close and not in all directions. To get clear wind you'd need to raise the wind sensors several metres above tree height which would be quit...
