Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
I have a DS2408 working now after debugging the Arduino library for it :) But I'm not using that for my wind instruments - I've decided to just get the now obsolete DS2423 and DS2450 circuit working with new optical sensors and hardware. The anemometer is working with the DS2423 counter and the wind...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Hi Alan Thank you for your reply :) I understand your wanting to keep power down for battery use. My weather station is and will continue to be near my observatory which has mains power backed up be a sealed lead acid battery, so I always have power available. So keeping power to a minimum is no lon...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
I'm having considerable trouble trying to get the DS2408 to work and it's doing my head in so I'm leaving it for a while. I think I could do with coming back to it afresh later. I'm now looking at other ideas.

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
The digital alternative to the above would be a CMOS 4000 series type 4520 dual 4 bit binary up counter, giving 8 output bits which could be read by a DS2408 1-wire device. But this would require more time to build. Using a reading every 3 seconds I could read the wind speed in increments of 1/3rd m...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
I think I might experiment with a diode pump circuit for counting anemoneter pulses which will convert a pulse rate to an analogue voltage which can then be read by a D/A converter such as the DS2438 with either 10v or 250mv A/Ds. The 250mv A/D would give better linearity but OTOH a non-linear respo...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Question now is - do I continue using obsolete components for which no replacements are available or change the design to use available and currently supported ones?

Re: 1-wire info and recommendations
Seems like the 1-wire options are reducing by the minute as Maxim withdraw devices without providing an alternative :( Maxim have discontinued the DS2450 :( Believe it or not there are still several 1-wire chips left in production :D I've been through the list and just the following six devices seem...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Yes, found a thread I started about 1-wire devices. Not quite up-to-date as Maxim have discontinued the DS2450 :( Believe it or not there are still several 1-wire chips left in production :D I've been through the list and just the following six devices seem of much use to me :- DS18B20 Digital therm...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Just looked back through this thread and find I didn't post the circuit diagram for the wind instruments so I think It's time I went through and discussed it. Where possible, I'm using 1-wire devices to make the measurements as this uses a multi-device bus rather like USB or I2C etc. but using just ...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Here are some photos of the mod for using the hall effect device. I designed and printed a new rotor taking 3 miniature "supermagnets" a mere 3mm cube but just did a small mod on the stator, drilling a hole for the hall effect chip wires. I connected up a test rig with LED and resistor to ...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
I've made a new rotor taking 3 tiny "supermagnets" a mere 3mm cube, and just modified the stator by drilling a hole for the hall effect chip wires. Made a test rig with a LED and series resistor to check that everything worked. It did and I have reassembled the anemometer and tried it out ...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
I think I shall use a hall effect device and three magnets which will fit well into the rotor that takes the cup spokes. Here is a photo of the anemometer parts. To change over to a hall effect device requires redesigning and printing two parts of the anemometer- the rotor to take two more magnets a...

Re: Arduino and 1-wire based home built weather station.
Thanks Mark :) I could try a weaker magnet or moving it further away as you suggest. I had thought of measuring duration of each half revolution rather that counting pulses - it's certainly a possibility though I haven't worked out just how I would do it. I've been thinking of this idea for the rain...
