So this is a commercial VPN, and I take it your FTP is also on some provider server, seeing that it worked before the VPN i guessing that they are blocking the VPN. Turn on FTP logging that is in settings/program settings/Program general options You may have to restart cumulusMX for this to take eff...

I just looked and I haven't had the error since June 24. SO hard to say why it happens next time I restart ill check but mapantz problem looks like it happens often

Good to hear it may work for you, it was the one thing I thought of if you can open any ports, plus pretty light on system. There are several desktops that are good to use for a pi like xfce, mate i know there may be others best to look for light weight desktop environments.

Mark perhaps could have mentioned that he has this routine that will insert the missing rows for you, as his next MX release won't tackle past catch-up errors. I saw that on the bottom of alarms page but not sure what the format should be for string.ini would need a descriptor with in [ ] then also options for text to equal

That did the trick Mark.
I did enter logging=1 in ini file but I didn't restart MX as I thought with updating settings with the dashboard it would reload on its own. either way it now works

I got the same errors, using my isp smtp, even tried localhost and saw no entries in the mail log files.
