Major Storm to Hit the UK and Ireland Sunday

Post by logjam »

By way of my own early warning, here in NW Devon I have had frequent winds over 50mph this morning. Rainfall around 0.8 cm/ hour. The lights have been flickering on and off.

This is the worst storm yet.

EDIT: The front has now passed over and there are a few breaks in the cloud. The wind however is forecast to get even stronger as it begins to turn westerly. It has dropped off for now.

My summerhouse roof is suffering, but my repairs a couple of days ago are holding. The main street through the village is a stream, but it will pass through fairly quickly. The houses on that street have all been built at least few feet higher than the road. They knew what they were doing.

There was massive rainfall towards the trailing edge of the front, with sleet along with the gales.

Yep we got the rain!! At one point I was registering 0.60 in/hr as the rain rate. That must mean the Somerset Levels are going to get flood levels going up again.

After a slight decrease in wind speed it is back up to 50mph. It isn't raining now but there is water running down the windows leaving a deposit. It caused me to go out and investigate. Although we are 2 1/2 miles from the coast it was salt water!

I think you will get it even worse than here, Ray. You can't be far from the Met Office's 'red zone'!

logjam,

The red area is in an arc from Anglesey to Blackpool. That's over 60 miles west of me. I think it will peak in the next hour or so. being 40 miles from the coast I wouldn't expect for gusts in excess of 60mph. Fingers crossed.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Current max gust 90.7kmh (56.3mph) at 1657... Crewe railway station shut after the roof blown in to some extent or another. No damage here (yet).

"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately.”

Amazing that we both recorded the same max gust Mike. Hope you don't suffer any damage. You offering B&B to train passengers tonight? ;)

Wind slackening off somewhat now, though still with gusts around 65-70kmh.

No surprise about Crewe station really - the roof was half wrecked in the winds of 2012 and is in the process of being further refurbished (some work was completed last year), so probably had lots of man-made gaps in it for the wind to get into tonight. Fortunately no one hurt and I'm sure the couple of hotels in the immediate vicinity are making the most of, er, the "windfall" in patronage :P

Lots of collateral damage in the area generally, from roof-tiles off to shop facades ripped away and several buildings with walls collapsed; trees blocking roads and power lines down, all the usual stuff and more given the severity of events. Much transport chaos, especially on the railway. Touch wood, no problems here at "sunny Swallowfield Close" yet ;)
