2013-14 Winter - how was yours?

Post by RayProudfoot »

Winter finished at midnight and I've now got the average temperature and a few other stats for what has been a remarkably mild winter for my station 10 miles south of Manchester, England at 53 degrees 21 minutes north.

Average Temp - 1 Dec - 28 Feb = 6.3C (1981-2010 average was 4.6C)

Number of days with minima at or below 0C = 1, 12th January.

Maximum Temperature = 12.8C on 23 February.

Lowest Pressure = 963.09hPa on 15 February (new all-time record).

Number of days with rainfall of 0.02" or more = 70 (out of 90).

Highest wind gusts - 56mph on 12 February and 54mph on 18 December. Both new records at the time.

Rainfall was above average at 10.39" (264mm) but not by much. It was a very stormy winter with numerous deep depressions crossing the country.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Thanks Peter. Always colder in Yorkshire! ;)

Kerry, those temps take my breath away. At the same time we get a record-breaking mild winter you have one of the most severe for many years. One import we most definitely don't want from the USA.

Ray,

And Spring is off to a cold start as well, -0.4F (-18C) here this morning. I have two dogs that need their daily xercise, so I have little choice but to be outside. It is really not too bad if you dress for it and with the snow, it is pretty.

Paul,

Winter did end yesterday - honest! ;)

Why do so many people want to live in the North American continent with winters as brutal as that?

Honest question. With mild winters and reasonable summers would you prefer the UK climate?
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Ray,
The astronomical winter (Northern Hemisphere) 2013 began on
Saturday, December 21
and ends on
Wednesday, March 19
Google never lies...
Honest question. With mild winters and reasonable summers would you prefer the UK climate?
Noooooo
We do have 4 distinct seasons so there is always something sunny in the future... or something different, and you do get used to it, and a good excuse to go south for March Break. Just this current winter has been much more harsh than recent history and we forget the real old fashioned winters of a few decades ago.

Paul,

Not sure why you would pick astronomical winter rather than meteorological winter. Here in the UK the Met Office uses the latter and not the former. Maybe it's different over there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter

Google doesn't lie but it is evil sometimes.

For our latitude we get very varied conditions but rarely dangerous or extreme. We're at the crossroads of continental, polar and maritime air streams so living here is like a battleground. I can understand why you wouldn't want our weather and whilst I envy your summers there's no way I would want your winters. Even moderate ones.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Further evidence it is still winter for us
In the USA and Canada (and sometimes in Britain) the season is regarded as beginning at the solstice and ending on the following equinox[9][10] – in the Northern Hemisphere, depending on the year, this corresponds to the period between 21 or 22 December and 19, 20 or 21 March. In the UK, meteorologists consider winter to be the three coldest months of December, January and February.
In any case we are hoping for spring-like weather to get here soon as our 2013-2014 winter is was very cold with lots of snow days.

Paul,

I'm not aware that winter has ever been determined to run from the winter solstice to the spring equinox in the UK. I shall listen and watch out carefully on March 20 for any statement.

I hope things pick up for you over there. Sometimes great summers follow bad winters. 1947 was a good example in the UK.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
