My record is 50, and I thought we were going to beat it, as there's more rain on the way this afternoon and forecast for all of the coming week, but we're having a short respite.

This is all caused by El Nino.

Re: Now we have crazy December weather in the UK
Richard I would be interested to know how many rain days you had totaling that 1740.
From our comparisons Steve's is actually a good reflection of UK v NZ
Sure we have a few areas up around 1500mm - 1700mm. But most would range from 900mm to 1200mm
Arthurs Pass in the Middle of the South Island stands alone each year and again in 2015 with 4012mm total
What is interesting is the rain days.
The UK has far more rain days and definitely more consecutive Rain Days and yet less rainfall in total.
Roaming around UK sites the Rainfall Totals appear around the 800 to 900mm mark.
Yep I know many stations do have high rainfall but I did not find too many.
Pitting Steve's against mine is a good example of this.
Steve - 1098 over 278 rain days
Jenny 1093 over 132 rain days (East Coast north Island of New Zealand)
Rain days in the UK double NZ rain days but same rainfall total.
However going on my lists here, Steve's 278 appears to be a little excessive
200 rain days appears more the average.
So you up there moan about the wet weather and we down here do rain dances loathing the endless dry days.
btw consecutive rain days for our area would average 8, 9, 10.
44 Steve? send it down
Cheers

Re: Now we have crazy December weather in the UK
Hi Jenny,
Your point about the same rainfall for a UK site and a NZ one but with half the number of rain days can probably be explained by the difference in latitude.
Your site is 39° from the Equator whereas Steve's is 59°. Warmer air holds more moisture so rainfall will be more intense. The UK is right in the firing line of North Atlantic depressions. Does NZ also suffer from frequent depressions or is your rainfall caused by a different process?
The UK has no real dry months although from my own records March & April (spring) are the driest. How does NZ compare in that respect?
