In general it will be stronger on hilltops as they stick up into the "free" atmosphere and are less affected by the frictional effect of the ground. BUT it does depend on an awful lot of things: atmospheric stability and upwind topography being just two of them.

Hi WXStevo,

To hopefully answer part of your question
how come down Tasmania is more windy than QLD

ironically I am a born and breed Queenslander and now live in Tasmania, it's because of the Roaring Forties
Tasmania lies smack bang in the path of the roaring forties - westerly winds that rip around the Earth in latitudes between 40 and 50 degrees.
The Roaring Forties bring wild winds, wet weather and cold temperatures to Tasmania and southern Australia. The bane of sailors since Cook first circumnavigated Antarctica, these mighty winds influence everything from delicate native rain forest rodents to parrots and penguins.
Some links for you to read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaring_Forties and http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/ ... 038604.htm
