Storm Doris to hit Northern England on Thursday
Latest forecasts from Met Office suggest this is going to be a fast moving and quite intense storm with the central part of the UK worst affected.
Gusts of up to 67mph now being forecast for my area tomorrow. There will also be a weather bomb with pressure change of 21hPa in 12 hours. That's pretty unusual! Reasonably probability my highest gust of 54mph will go tomorrow.

A small risk of 90mph in some exposed areas, although the ARPEGE does tend to go a bit overboard sometimes. 80mph is a certainty though.

Re: Storm Doris to hit Northern England on Thursday
BBC North-West Tonight forecaster said strongest gusts will be inland which is unusual. Higher ground probably like Peak District.
I love weather records being broken but wind is a pain because of potential damage to property.

12 hours of 40mph + forecast for here, and a few 50mph + showing up too. I need to beat 48mph on this station.
One thing I am pleased about, the new pole I put up for my new anemometer, it hardly moved at all during 18mph sustained and 30mph gusts, today. The old aerial pole used to wobble and oscillate quite a lot at those speeds. It'll get a better test tomorrow!

Here on the shore of Lough Rynn, County Leitrim, we're not expecting the winds to be too bad - feels good not to be in the firing line for a change. Met Eireann have warned of up to 50mm rain overnight, though.
Good luck over there...

Cheers Steve. Hopefully the anemometer will survive. Hope you're enjoying life.

The calm before the storm - literally. Hardly a breath of wind out there now. Hard to believe when Doris is so close...

Looks like its just starting here for rain heavily. Pressure is dropping like a lead ballon.

Dry intrusion showing up very nicely on the IR sat. It is still possible that a sting jet may occur from this, as the low exits the UK. Maybe through Lincolnshire in to Norfolk.

Same here at 11:54. Still under the all-time record of 56mph though.
Update: 51mph just recorded.

Looks like your going to top out 55 Ray, I'm at 45 mph. Most disappointing, I was hoping for a gust strong enough to bring down our neighbours massive eucalyptus tree

Surprising your max gust was so much lower Mark. You'll have to sneak round after dark with a good saw and give the next storm a helping hand.mcrossley wrote:Looks like your going to top out 55 Ray, I'm at 45 mph. My all-time max was 56mph so it's a bit disappointing not to break that. Still, the anemometer is still working so that's always welcome!

Max wind here of only 42 mph, but from NE, so cold and wet. Quite a nice wind dir trace as Doris tracked well south of us.

Re: Storm Doris to hit Northern England on Thursday
Some nice graphics posted by others. I have created a montage of wind, pressure and temperature.
It's days like this that make our hobby more enjoyable especially if your kit survives and no damage has been caused to your property. 2 out of 2 for me - hopefully you too.
0.53" (13.5mm) of rain isn't a problem but pressure change of 21hPa in 8hr 40m is very unusual. Met Office confirmed Doris qualified as a weather bomb.
And the anemometer had its most rigorous test since it replaced my earlier one broken in a December 2013 storm and passed with flying colours. The only disappointment was my all-time wind record not being broken although the 10-minute average was with a sustained speed of 30mph.
Highest Wind Run record of 432.3 miles is not in danger with 263.2 miles so far today.
