UK Storm Fionn impact

Post by RayProudfoot »

A band of heavy rain has now moved into NW England but what is really noticeable is the big drop in pressure. Currently falling very rapidly at 2.88hPa / hr.

But interestingly winds have dropped off slowly all day. I suspect they'll increase significantly as the low moves to the east overnight.

Pressure now falling 3.22hPa /hr. Pity Cumulus doesn't keep these records. This is a big one.

UPDATE: Now dropping at 3.56hPa/hr.

This is not storm Fionn, Ray. This is where the naming system creates so much confusion. Storm Fionn was a small kink in the isobars that delivered gusts in excess of 70mph across Northern Ireland yesterday, so Met Eireann named it. The Met Office didn't name tonight's system, neither did Met Eireann. Interesting though, as it has undergone RaCy, and will continue to deepen as it exits the UK.

Cheshire. It's in my location. ;) I'm not talking about lowest pressure. I'm talking about greatest drop (or rise) in pressure in one hour.

Ah right. That explains why there was no reference to Fionn on the UKMO site. Bizarre though because this one looks like it will deliver strong winds as it moves east.

Check that squeeze on the isobars - gonna be nasty down the Eastern side. Also, notice that cold air being wrapped around on the Northern flank.. no wonder there's an amber warning out for another 15 - 20cm snow. Lucky sods!

Looks nasty for 0100-0500 for this neck of the woods. I'd be surprised if we get snow here but the Pennines will suffer as usual.

Pressure now dropping at 3.74hPa/hr. Must be a record.

Northerners always have more impressive curves! :D

Wind is picking up here now but nothing over 30mph yet. But pressure drop continues to impress. 3.79hPa/hr now. It's tempting to stay up and watch it but I probably won't.

23:45 update: 3.96hPa/hr drop!
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
