Potentially, a special period of weather closing in..
I'm sure some of the British members have read headlines about a 'big freeze' coming?! I would ignore them to a certain extent. But, we're on the cusp of something very special since the Sudden Stratospheric Warming has taken place.
I've been follow the charts closely (as many others have) over the past 10 days, and confidence is growing on a severe blast from the East. Upper temperature being progged at -13 to -15 in parts of England, that could produce nighttime surface minima's towards -10 for widespread areas. A noticeable windchill too. Snow *could* be an issue too!
You can bet your life that the Met Office are watching this unfold very carefully.
Exciting times!

I was getting sceptical about this cooling off period because the BBC Weather people were talking about temps dropping down towards the end of this week. And daytime temps of 3-5C aren't anything unusual.
But it's next week (Monday onwards) where daytime maxima for this area are forecast to hardly rise above freezing. Interesting times. I imagine visitor numbers to my site will shoot up at the weekend.

I'm still keeping an eye out on the charts. Quite frankly, they look outrageous! I'd still expect to see minus double-digits in places over night, but if this was the beginning of January, it would probably break cold temperature records.
-15C 850hPa temperature across most of England and Wales - extremely impressive!
The next stage is to watch for any kinks in the isobars which will enhance shower activity - particularly across Eastern areas, but spreading inland. And then the one to watch... a channel low! Living down here, snnow is very rare, so this is the best opportunity to get significant falls of snow.

First light covering of snow down here for many many years. I'm also in an amber warning area for snow later today, and freezing rain. I hope that doesn't break my third anemometer?!
A rare red warning for central belt of Scotland, and parts of Devon and Cornwall.

We have snow here like we've not had for many years. Drifts upto 4 feet across the local fields and local roads blocked. Occasional blizzard conditions with the snow slightly on the wet side (longer sea track for NE Scotland than further south across East England). Met Office warnings timely and to be praised in general.
We've had a record wind-chill at -11.2C (data back to 2011).

I am unable to get out of my back door due to a huge drift. This is easily the most snow for 20+ years. It might even be 30 years - 1987?!

Now it's raining. Unpleasant walking conditions as snow slowly turns to mush.

our so called snow, was all gone yesterday. we hardly had anything to talk about here. 20 miles or so, south of here, was a different story.

9cm of snow during this morning. A rare occurrence during Winter, let alone March 18th.
