Pressure has been dropping since just before 0900GMT and is going down at 1.2Mb/hr. Hardly a breath of wind at the moment.
This is where it gets interesting.

What's your record low pressure Geoff? You're pretty close to the centre of the low.

Pressure here has dropped 11Mb in 9 hours. If it continues that would equate to 29Mb in 24 hours! But still very little wind. Max gust 6kts since noon. Things will be changing soon I think.

That's scary Daj! My drop-rate is only 1.66Mb/hr.

Geoff, I reckon your record of 973.6 might go tonight.

Wow, enjoy the exciting weather

We had a similar low pressure system cross northern NZ in July 2008. The central pressure in the far north of the country got down to 964 hPa, about the equal lowest on record there. In Auckland there was a 12 hPa pressure drop in 3 hours! :o

The pressure change is now described by Cumulus as "falling very rapidly" -2.07Hpa/hr. First time I can remember seeing that! :o Highest gust is still only 12mph in last 10 minutes. :?

And now the UK Met Office has issued the following severe weather warning for NW England...

Rain will become heavy on Monday morning with accumulations of 20 to 30 mm expected, especially in the west.
The rain will turn to snow above 400 m, giving accumulations of up to 5 cm on higher roads. The snow may drift in strong to gale force winds, with gusts of up to 60 mph possible.

My station is below 400m (85m) so I won't get the snow but it will get very nasty on trans-Pennine routes tomorrow morning. I'm just glad I have the day off.

Here's the latest rainfall radar.

I am currently showing -3.0 per hour. Windspeed around 20mph, highest was 41.3 about 90 minutes ago.

Should I run away!

I think we are all in for a rough ride

We've just reached gale force 8 here, 40 mph, gusts to 50 mph. Pressure 985 mb, (-1.77 mb/hr) not falling as rapidly as it was earlier. I don't think we'll be breaking any records here, this is just normal Orkney weather

Run away David? I hope not. It's -2.75Mb/hr here now with pressure at 992.6. Just started raining. 10-minute gust now 17mph. Steve would laugh at this given his conditions.

After 4 or 5 hours of calm the wind has just started up here and now just a Force 2 westerly. Pressure now falling very rapidly, well over -2mb/h. The temperature is rising slowly now.
