Lovely robin pic, Geoff :) Looks like you could do with tiny heaters in the wind vane and anemometer housings, David. I must get round to making my rain gauge heater - the precipitation is not being detected, it's just collecting in a heap!

No, not a DSLR, I have Fujifilm Finepix S100 ..... a 'bridging camera' I think it is called!

I think it is a great camera, and suits me down to the ground.

Robins can be really tame. This one has been pottering about our garden for a while. You don't have to be out there long before he joins you. He is looking so fat because he has fluffed up his feathers because of the cold weather.

I only venture into my garden for 1) maintenance of my VP2 and 2) sunning myself so don't come across robins that often. :D

But I'm aware they can be quite trusting and the plumping up of their feathers to keep warm. It never even crossed my mind that you fed him too much and I was looking at an obese variety. ;)

Overnight it dropped to -7.3C in my garden but nearby Woodford (and probably Mark in Wilmslow) dropped to -10C. Last winter was considered pretty cold but last night's minimum was lower than in December, February and March!

The pressure map is starting to look like that of winter 1962/63 with large high pressure cells forming over Scandinavia and Iceland and low pressure over France. Although daytime temps may pick up a bit this week the increased wind will probably make it feel even colder. This cold spell could continue for at least another week according to the Met Office.

Still, all is not lost. England are giving an excellent account of themselves down-under!

You're right Ray, I registered -10.3C at about 7am this morning. A record low for me as I set up my weather station a few days after the record lows in early January this year (the wireless thermometer inside my shed/observatory recorded -13.5C)

Not quite that cold here but cold enough, that's for sure! -5C at 0800 this morning. The little bit of snow we had is gradually drying up and going. The sun is trying to break through the cloud so hoping for a brighter day today. I'm not going out though! Still black ice on the country lanes round here :(

I guess that is one compensation for the low temperatures - we have been having beautiful days (and nights) with crystal clear skies - just the odd convection cloud in the middle of the day. Ideal walking weather!

No records broken as yet (I'm excluding apparent -8.3C) in the South, my lowest was -5C at 07:29. Why is your shed temp so low, is it the accuracy of the unit or your weather station in question?
