Yes, that's correct.

Hi Steve,

With regards to Cumulus upload to WOW (in my case Aus version) I've been uploading for a long time now and just wondered if there is a time frame you have for possible inclussion of the Davis Pro2 Soil Data to be uploaded to WOW Aus or if it's a way off I should possibly look at other means to upload.
regards
Tony

Sorry, I don't know. I am busy with a completely new version of Cumulus and I am only doing small updates to the existing version. I'll try to find some time to see how much effort it would be. If I can send them unconditionally that would be very easy. I think this is OK as the WOW site allows you to specify what items you capture, so anyone who doesn't have either of those sensors wouldn't enable them and so hopefully WOW would ignore the values Cumulus sends for them (which would probably be zero).

WOW asks for soil moisture as a percentage and Davis apparently supply centibars, so can you please tell me how I convert?

Not easily, they seem to be measuring different things, WOW wants moisture content, Davis is supplying a surface tension 'sucking power'...

I've just realised that when I added uploading of soil temp and moisture to WU uploads, I didn't notice that they too expect percent and not centibars.

Looks like WD just does the same, this WU station for example has a note on it about this: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-we ... KTXMCKIN27

Hi Steve/Mark,

Apologies for late reply had some bad weather come through and flat out.

A: With ref to the BoM-WoW Soil Moisture upload:
I am waiting on a reply from BoM-WoW. I sent a very detailed email regards same, so hopefully I'll get a response.

I have noted on all other BoM-WoW sites in Australia that are uploading Soil Moisture, that they are all confirmed as being (cb - moisture tension) and not converted to (% - percent by volume) however they are displayed as (%) moisture percent by volume.
These are not using Cumulus to upload;
1: http://bom-wow.metoffice.gov.uk/weather ... =522966015
2: http://bom-wow.metoffice.gov.uk/weather ... D=63537190
3: http://bom-wow.metoffice.gov.uk/weather ... =547796234
4: http://bom-wow.metoffice.gov.uk/weather ... eID=269961
5:http://bom-wow.metoffice.gov.uk/weather ... =698886040

B: With ref to Soil Moisture (%) v (cb) and variable calculation:

Obviously the requirement for this would totally depend on WoW requirements and then if it's worth doing in cumulus at all as users would need to input variable soil types etc (something you may not wish to do Steve.
I would envisage the best person to engage on the Calc side would be Tom Ehrensperger, developer of WXSIM (Weather Simulator).
The WXSIM web site is here: http://www.wxsim.com/
Quote from Toms info:
Soil moisture is now reported in soil moisture tension as well as percent by volume, with these being functions of each other as well as of soil type.
I was the first site to use WxSim with Cumulus and Tom is currently undergoing a global study on the software so he's rather snowed under at present and is in the process of enabling Cumulus to input Soil Data into WxSim for me. I am waiting on email from Tom regards this however due to the recent loss of a one of his family members, i'm leaving it for Tom to respond rather than chase him down.

When Tom does respond I'll see if he has some ideas/answers.

C: With ref to the ExtraDataLogs for the Soil Data, is there intent to build Day/Hi-Lo/Month/Year tags into the new Cumulus Version.
I would love to be able to use the log data now however time and know how allude me.

I suppose possibilities are to :
1: upload the daily txt files to server and have a php script interrogate them. (not shore how to do either).
2: upload the live data to MySql and use Highcharts to display. (not shore how to do either).

Mark I finally got HighStocks running and added my Solar Data http://hrvistaweather.com/graphs_recent.php
However when I include same in my Saratoga template http://hrvistaweather.com/wxrecentChartsSQLHS.php it cycles through a continual refresh, stripped all possible conflicting code from the Saratoga template but to no avail. I'll drop you an email if that's OK rather than hog this thread.

I imagine that everyone who is using software to do automatic updates to both WOW and WU is sending cb rather than percent.

Yes, once the new version is working fully, I'll start looking at the enhancements requests with a view to implementing them in the new version.

You were not alone ;)

I am glad Tom has finally got around to looking at integrating the soil data into the forecast :)

Too true Duke,

Well I finally got around to doing something with my Davis Pro2 Soil Temp and Moisture Data, for the time being anyway.

Still not uploading to BoM-WoW but at least know I'm displaying it on my website.

I setup a soilT.txt file for Cumulus to upload the Davis Pro soil data (<#date> <#timehhmmss> <#SoilTemp1> <#SoilTemp2> <#SoilMoisture1> <#SoilMoisture2>) bit overkill but for now it's uploading in realtime.

Then modified an ImpotCumulus script to store it server side in MySql table.
Then modified a RealtimeCumulusSql script to query it.
Then modified a RealtimeCumulus .js script for HighStocks Graphs.
Then a new page displaying the data from CUTags, php (created a heap of graphics for use in the display) and then added the HighStock charts.

Now just need to apply ajax updates at some stage and also some more queries to see if I can get Monthly/Yearly stats from MySql (not done much of that) if anyone has any tips.

Here's the page : http://hrvistaweather.com/wxsoil.php charts are in approx (1) min data and once it fills up will display last 7 days. (Only set it up at 09:15 EST this morning).

Happy for anyone to pick it to pieces as not done that much with soil monitoring in the past.

Not heard from Tom as yet. will post when I do Duke.

Hi Steve,

Finally received about 4 replies from WoW regards the Soil (cb) v (%).

Here's one;
At present the website does not support the upload of Soil Moisture measurements in cb, the WOW sites that are submitting data to WOW using the API, are sending it in the %Moisture section so the website reads it as this. We have identified this as a problem as there are a large number of contributors who have Davis systems that report Soil Moisture in cb

As part of the developments to WOW in the very near future we will add the ability to upload data on an additional range of variables including cb, and we hope to add some Site feedback mechanisms and better stats.

Thank you for your feedback and I will post on the forum when there are new features.
So I suppose watch this space, sounds good though at least they are addressing it.

regards

Thanks - in that case I think I'll wait to add soil data until they've done their changes.

An update on BoM WoW and Soil Moisture v Centibar.
Soil Moisture can be reported in the Manual Observation form as Centibars. We are about to go to Tender for the development of the website to improve the way it works and the functionality, as part of this the capability for automatic ingestion of Soil Moisture measurements in Centibars will be added. Once the supplier is announced and the full scope is available we will release communications through the website and other media channels

Progress, at least. Let's hope they choose a (good) supplier quickly and the enhancements don't take long.
