The Yellow Alert has gone now....although they do say it's going to get colder during the week, so I expect an ice warning will appear at least

The high cell over western Russia split into two earlier today with one cell having a central pressure of 1060hPa. Since then it seems to have merged back into a single cell but pressure is now 1062hPa! I don't remember when there was such an intense cell. According to Wiki "The highest barometric pressure ever recorded on Earth was 1,085.7 hectopascals (32.06 inHg) measured in Tonsontsengel, Mongolia on 19 December 2001". So some way short of that but still quite rare.

It's moved back eastwards but its influence is more widespread given its size. If this monster does move west we could be stuck with some very cold weather with significant wind chill.

This is why the chap in Sweden in another thread was getting 'exceptional weather' in his forecast, as the pressure was outside the normal limits. I was going to question whether there was some sort of problem with his station for him to be having a reading of 1055 mb, and then I remembered this intense high.

Did you see this message from a chap in Denmark? viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6936

Although quite a way away from the centre of the cell he'll still be getting high readings but his problem appears to be one of wildly fluctuating values.

I can't decide if I want it to move westwards for a record high pressure reading because my gas bill will take a big hit! :?

If the predicted pressure on this site is correct it could reach 1044hPa across much of northern England and southern Scotland by midnight on Saturday. http://magicseaweed.com/msw-surf-charts ... e=pressure

That would beat my existing record of 1043.35.

My existing record is 1045.1

Just saw the local weather, and they have confirmed that the weather is blowing from the east now.

Apparently Calais had nearly an inch of snow today....amazing what a difference a 22 mile gap across the sea makes

That's almost certainly an erroneous record, sorry. Very high pressure requires cold air which makes any summer records unlikely. Check this nearby site for that day. http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... &year=2011
1019hPa was reported there. My own site reported around 1012hPa.

Pressure still dropping here (1024) and wind has dropped to calm. The North Sea acts like a big blanket in winter. :D

That is my site :? Shows a max of 1044.9 there: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... arend=2011

Looks like there's some missing data though

Here's another near one that is quite abit lower: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... arend=2011

We've had some sleet at my level, and up the hills it was snowing, and laying, but not huge amounts of snow. Enough to make the front of my car icey though.
Pressure dropping slowly here, currently 1022.8

It's too wet out there now for any snow to fall and lay, unless the temperature drops a few degrees

Looking at one of the jet stream models http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display ... =natla_250 it looks like next week could be much colder than this weeks predictions..... we might then get a snow streamer in the south east, probably wishful thinking on my part.

Yes. It is strange because the 1044.9 value cannot be found for the 24th but it clearly shows as the month high. But you can check your daytime.txt and if it's there use the edit facility in Cumulus to alter it.

Pressure is now rising here and the central pressure of the Russian high is 1062. Next few days are due to have hard frosts with -7C for Manchester. Ouch!

The high reading isn't present in the WU tabular data because you're using Rapid Fire. WU selects which of the updates to put in the table according to some algorithm known only to them. You presumably had some sort of glitch in your pressure reading at 10:16, which was uploaded to WU and became your high reading there.

It is a monster, the problem with it allowing the atlantic to penetrate it this weekend, is the fact that the low attacks it at it's weakest point, and that we're on the outskirts of the high pressure.
Synoptically speaking, we're pretty unlucky for that to happen.
That high could be reading 1100mb, but in it's orientation, it would still allow the Atlantic to break through. So at the moment, i see many places receiving some nice snowfall over the weekend, on the leading edge of the front, while it turns to rain quickly on the back edge. But the cold will hang on in the South East, or return (depending how much energy there is out to the West)
And i suggest a reload at some point. February to me is shaping up to be the first below average CET month for some time.
