Hi,

Having been interested in the weather for many years, i decided to get myself a weather station...
(n96gy) which is ticking away nicely as i write this..

As i want to get the most out of my little system and understand it to the best of my ability i would be interested to hear of any good books to point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Chris Scott

If it's books on meteorology you're looking for, there's a list of recommended books on the 'Weatherfaqs' site that I maintain - http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/105. The rest of the site has lots of useful information (not written by me, I hasten to add).

I've got the Ross Reynolds book, and it's very good.

I'm not sure that there are any books about 'home' weather stations.

The Met office Fact Sheets (already mentioned on here) are an excellent introduction to the weather -

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/library/publications/factsheets

Of if you are interested if forecasting, try and get hold of Tim Vasquez series of books. They are very detailed and aimed more at forecasters, but are still full of very good useful information.

Hi,
Another title to consider if you want a really good general overview is The Weather Handbook, 2nd edition by Alan Watts (he of Instant Weather Forecasting fame), Adlard Coles Nautical publishing, I think this is just a brilliant book!
If you decide to take to the next level I'd recommend Atmosphere, Weather and Climate by Roger Barry and Richard Chorley.
cheers,
Bill.

Hi,

Your question prompted me to have a look though some of my older books. Another that you and indeed anyone else might be interested in is Outlook, Weather Maps and Elementary Forecasting by G.W. White, Standford Maritime publishing.

This is another of those books that I think gets it just right. As with the Weather Handbook it's non mathematical and observation based a great introduction to weather maps and forecasts (especially the shipping forecast, this is a UK-centric book). There are numerous example weather maps to explain things. There's even a handful of blank maps at the back for one to practise on should one be so inclined.

This was first printed in 1967, it's been re-printed a few times. I got mine in a second hand book shop when I was studying meteorolgy at uni. That was the 1984 edition but I don't know if it's ever been re printed since. Check Amazon or the like.

Anyway this is another one for anybody who wants an excellent general look at our temperate maritime weather situation.

cheers,
Bill.
