Looking through my 'All-Time Records' reminds me of some memorable meteorological events. I'm sure you can remember some of yours too.

It's a close call between two for me. The morning of 7 January 2010 with crystal clear skies, snow-covered ground and the thermometer showing -11.1C is one. A few miles away at work the car thermometer dropped to -15C! Slightly further east Woodford aerodrome, Cheshire recorded -18.2C making it one of the coldest places in England that January. I'd never experienced cold like it before except perhaps for the winter of 1981/82 but I had no instruments to measure it then.

The afternoon of 12 August 2010 is the second when over 1" (25.4mm) of rain fell in an hour and was unforgettable. It had already been raining for much of the day but the heavens opened around 4.30pm and rain fell like stair-rods for the next hour. I recorded 2.06" that day.

It's the 3rd anniversary of my station records next week. Those two records stand out for me. What were yours?

A couple of weeks ago I reached my 3rd anniversary of recordings which began on 15 April 2009 with my manual recordings. At the moment I am transcribing these recordings from paper so I can update the all time records to reflect these readings. From memory, times I can remember are for example what I call the "the may wet" when we got a massive rain event at the end of autumn 2009, but we generally tend get less of the big rain later on in autumn particularly but sometimess it happens. On 19th May we got 32mm, on the 20th we got 104mm and on the 21st we got 152mm giving a total of 288mm which is 11 and a half inches.

The coldest morning I remember was also in 2009 when we got 1.9 degrees C on 12th June. As it 20 km inland from the coast but in the subtropics its does a get little cool in the morning but not no lower normally than 2 to 4 Degrees C. Lucky I am on a bit of a hill ,so we never get frost. But I will know my all time records better once I sorted out all my older recordings since 2009.

Although I've only had my station running since the end of January (2012), I've recorded some decent data.

The best so far: -8.3C 11th Feb
Wind Gust 32.3mph 29.4.2012
25.4mm rain (midnight to midnight) 29.4.2012
976.hPa 18.4.2012

April was a good month for weather data! :D

I remember the -18°C well, it was about 5 days before I got my weather station :bash: , but I have a radio thermometer in my observatory/shed that was reading -18.2°C here in Wilmslow. Amazing, deep freeze temperatures in NW England.

This April has been the second wettest month in my records with 126mm, and a mean temperature of 7.1°C compared with 12.3°C last year. Let's hope summer get better.

I have only had my weather station installed since Jan 2011, and Cumulus since Feb 2011, but I take great delight in informing my family that the current day is the coldest/warmest/wettest/etc. 'since records began'. I wouldn't say they are wildly excited about this. :)

But yes, this April has been interesting. We have had the wettest month (126.3mm) and the longest wet period (9 days) 'since records began' and this is in stark contrast to last April, when we had the longest dry period.

Gives us something to do and talk about, doesn't it!

Colin

Absolutely Colin! I also impart 'new record' info on my work colleagues. They look about as interested as your family does. :D

this one would be my most memorable, mainly because it was slam bang in the middle of a week of high winds

Highest Daily Wind Run 604.6 miles on 29 November 2011

For me it is the record low of -15.2°C recorded on the 7th February 2012 with my old WS2300 station. Being in the proximity of the North Sea Coast it is rare for us to see temperatures dipping below -10°C and even more so with no snow on the ground. It was the lowest temperature since i started recording in January 2006. And also the lowest temperature since January 1997, when we had about -16°C at our official DWD weather station.

With the Fine Offset station i had recorded -1.8°C on 8th April 2012, also quite a remarkable value for April and the first April with a frost in the past four years.

A 122 km/h record in October 24 2011 which I never knew if it was fake or not, but it seemed to so I deleted it, even though the wind was hella scary that night  Also 40,1ºC maximum today, not something that we get every day.
