Which station to get WH1081 OR WH3081

Post by ace2 »

Well after 4 years, my trusty Maxkon WS1081 has died.
I'm tossing up to either get a WH1081 or WH1081, both of these are a solar versions and the WH1081 is a identical looking one to mine, but with solar of course.
Any thoughts on either of these, I'm on a tight budget, so cheapest is the only option.. .

WH1081 isn't usually a model number for a station with solar sensors (but I suppose it might have had solar power added).

Hi,

Yes, as steve says, only the 308x has solar sensors and the Console is physically quite different to the touchscreen 1081, with a clearer screen and push-buttons. Some of the touchscreen versions do have solar charging (only) but IMHO it's almost completely pointless, with the "rubbish" technology "Rechargeable Alkaline" cells supplied by Fine Offset (and others).

Personally, I do "prefer" the 308x, but there is still some doubt if the original "issues" have been fully solved. Also, in the UK it's always been sold at a very significant "price premium" (up to twice the cost of a 1081 on a good day), which I don't feel is justified for the rather questionable solar data. At one time the 3081 seemed to sell in Australia at hardly any price premium over the 1081(perhaps they were trying to "shift" all the faulty ones), but the last time I looked, the additional cost of the (perhaps improved) 3083 didn't really look like value for money.

A search for 3080, 3081, 3083 or 308x on the forum may give a greater insight.

Cheers, Alan.

The 1081 is a WH, but it reads as solar & showing a image of the solar, but it doesn't mention UV or Lux in the features, so I'm guessing it's charging only.
I bit the bullet and opted for the WH3081 for a mere $8 premium over the WH1081.
Since the outside equipment looks identical to the WH3081 apart from the solar transmitter, I use the others for spare parts :)
