Di yeah ken Scots?

Post by daj »

This is a brilliant site... http://www.ayecan.com

Our UK Census is this Sunday and as part of it we are being asked if we understand the Scottish dialect (which is different to the Galic language spoken (mostly) in Northern Scotland). Scots being an incarnation of English developed over hundreds or years. The site is supposed to help us Scots asses if we can understand our own language.

It's amazing how many dialects we have for a population of only 5 million, compared to the UK as as whole with 62 million.

If nothing else, for you foreigners, it gives you a chance to hear how we speak around the country.

Foreigners? huh!
Actually, I found it more difficult to understand Scots the further south I listened.
Is that because the further south you go, the closer to England you get?
