Bearings for wind cups WH1080

Post by NWChris »

Hi, I have a seized wind cup bearing in my National Geographic 256NC (which I understand is a the same as a WH1080). I was about to order the 10mm x 5mm x 4mm bearing from a Canadian bearing supplier and was wondering if I should get a sealed bearing ( eg MR105-2RS Radial Ball Bearing Double Sealed Bore Dia. 5mm OD 10mm)?

Would the seal create extra friction making low wind measurements difficult? I like to use the wind speed for determining whether to fly small RC planes, you see.

Would a shielded SS bearing be a better bet (eg SMR105-ZZ Stainless Steel Ball Bearing Bore Dia. 5mm Outside 10mm)?

I guess I could order the whole wind cup assembly from China, but delivery takes a long time.

Thanks,
-Chris, Ontario, Canada

After consulting with my cousin, a millwright, and some internet research I opted for the SMR105-ZZ, stainless steel shielded bearing. The sealed bearing will definitely have more friction than the shielded, I'm told. So I will oil the bearings with a 3 in 1 oil and hope for the best!

You are right to select metal shields over rubber seals, but either type should come prepacked with grease and not need oiling....which might lower the grease viscosity. The shields have fine clearances and keep the grease in place.
Having said that, I too had the anemometer bearing start to stick (after almost 5 years) and a drop of thin (sewing machine oil, not 3-1) oil fixed it without needing to replace it. That was a year ago.

Hi guys.

Northern England is wet and windy so the bearings get a battering.

I reworked my original bearing with 24 hour soak in WD40.

Worked a treat.

I fitted replacement bearings on my original anemometer, but the replacement bearings cost me much more than Maplins charge for the complete anemometer it seems hardly worth repairing them. I paid around £3.25 for the item from Maplin.
