Yeah, my display unit fell of its shelf and broke the glass! Yes, I did swear.
The display still works, and a tentative check of the touch screen shows it seems to work.
This might indicate that an outer layer of protective glass is what broke.

The break is a big star burst centered right over the memory circle.

so, has anyone ever replaced the glass? Is it even possible? Here's hoping.

Get a window's expert (not Bill Gates) to cut some for you.
I do know that it is cheaper this way for wing mirrors on cars as it is a whole lot cheaper than having to buy a whole wing mirror, so hopefully it should only cost a couple of quid.

An update. Got my display (265NC ) unit apart and found:
The touch film cable unplugs from the PCB with a good strong straight pull - no clips or locks,
The glass is adhered to the touch film only around the perimiter, so hopefully will be easy to separate the shards from the film,
The glass is only 1mm thick, so am wondering where I might find replacement that thin - picture glass?,
Dimensions of the glass are exactly 6 & 1/8" by 4 & 1/2" - just in case anyone else needs to make a replacement too.

Photos and procedure for repair to follow - when I find the glass.

No one else broken a display screen glass? :?:

How about a piece of acrylic sheet - doesn't break like glass. Some people take the touch screen away from in front of the display to improve the contrast. (And some replace the touch screen with switches.)

Well, I can confirm that it is not possible to replace the broken touch screen glass on a FO display!

While waiting to find a possible replacement glass, I reassembled the display, using foam strips as packing in front of the display to take the place of the touch screen.
Image
This is needed to ensure the rubber conducting strip makes firm contact between the PCB and the LCD contacts.

The original glass is 1.1mm thick. All I could find was nominal 2mm glass (1.8mm), so cut it to size. Then proceeded to dismantle the original touch screen plastic outer film from the glass.

Disaster! The touch screen glass is special, with tiny bumps all over it, which make contact with the flexible touch screen wherever touched.
Image
Besides that, some of the silver track stuck to the broken glass, some stuck to the plastic film, and it all tore. Useless now.

Having cut the glass, I fitted it anyway, to protect the LCD in case of future accidents. It meant NOT screwing the PCB screws all the way in, because this glass is thicker. Having read a post on this forum about using switches in place of the touch screen, I cut a slot in the back cover and fed the ribbon cable out of the back of the case for future experiments.

While it may be possible to remove the touch screen from the display and use it in a separate frame (as has been posted here), repairing a broken one isn't possible.

Now where can I find a replacement?

"With knobs on", eh! I see. Very useful information that - thank you. Sorry you weren't able to make a repair :( Good luck with the external switch mod. :)

No progress on installing small switches to replace the touch screen yet, though I did find 16 micro switches in a CD player unit I dismantled. Perhaps for a later project.

However in the meantime I contacted Thermor Ltd, who have a web presence under the name of BiosExactly. http://www.biosexactly.com/

Thermor is the Canadian company whose name is name printed on the back of my 265NC unit, branded National Geographic. An email to Thermor confirmed that they could supply a replacement touch screen.

Further discussion determined the price at $45CAN, plus GST & shipping. So it arrived yesterday and as I suspected from the price is a complete receiver/console/display. More than I wanted or was expecting. However, now I can experiment with the older unit - things like using the switches; can 2 receivers lock onto one transmitter, etc...

Their service department assures me that have all necessary parts for the Easy Weather units - anemometer, rain gauge, TX, post and brackets.

Perhaps those in need of parts can make use of this.
