Blocking unwanted countries by IP

Post by duke »

On my business web sites I have started getting a lot of hits from Russia, China etc. I thought there was a script or program on the board somewhere that could quickly and easily block countries by IP by using regularly updated tables, alas, I cannot find it. Using the .htaccess file is the obvious quick and dirty way to accomplish this but the file is too large and way too slow.

Mark Crossley's use of ZB Block got me interested, so I started using it, and it works quite well. Worth a try? :)

Excellent, thank you, that's it. For some reason I thought it was by MaxMind, (IP database company).

Just noticed, this has not been updated since October 2014, same on their twitter feed. Will still give it a whirl ;)

The original author seems to be having a 'rest' from ZB Block, but there is an 'user contribution' update of the IP databases and filters on the ZB Block forum. I use those to keep mine updated - maybe twice a year.

You can get the files directly from these two repositorys:
