123-reg ripping me off for domain renewal

Post by RayProudfoot »

I've had my domain name registered with 123reg.co.uk since 2009. Each two years they've charged me around £8 for a two year renewal. This time it's gone up to £26.98. Needless to say I'm very unimpressed with them and have sent a complaint pointing out it's a private site, not a business one and provides a public service.

I suppose I'm stuck with them as they own the domain. It does stink though. be careful if you're considering buying a domain from them.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray,
As far as I know you can buy that domain from any of the firms offering sale and not stuck with the same firm beyond the current term, and think you can do the same at renewal.

Just checking GoDaddy and it says:
Sorry, cheadlehulmeweather.co.uk is taken. Still want it? Here's what you do.

Go to GoDaddy.com site and click on that "Here's what you do."

My 6 one-year renewals this past December were U$14.99 for .com and U$16.99 for .ca which was about the same as previous one-year renewals.

Enjoy,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I did as you suggested and the price I'm quoted is £48.99 + commission. God knows how much commission is.

I'll wait to hear from 123reg. Hopefully they'll reconsider the amount. It's tant amount to blackmail and totally unacceptable.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray,
Looks like I wasn't clear and my intended humour didn't work
That link is when you want to buy a domain that isn't yours and they will then try to get it for you, at who knows what cost, plus their commission. My intended point was to show that you can transfer your domain to another provider. Doing some reading on it tells me it is maybe a little more difficult than I thought, but still possible.

Good luck,
Paul

have a look about for other prices. you can "move" to another domain registrar and bring your domain with you. or go for a less expensive domain, I wish they would make a .wx domain!

.org's tend to be cheaper than country based domain names.

No reply from 123 reg this morning. I'm reluctant to change my site domain. I may have to bite the bullet on this but will certainly investigate my options in 22 months time.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

123-reg have been increasing their prices for U.K. domains steadily over the last 18 months or so. The first increase was because Nominet increased the wholesale price of domains by 50%, and 123-reg standardised the price of U.K. domains at 6.99 per year (plus vat). There have apparently since been further increases to 7.99 and then to 9.99 per year, since GoDaddy bought the parent company of 123-reg.

It’s a fairly simple process to transfer your domain to another registrar (you own the domain, not them) if you believe there is one offering better value, but since GoDaddy must now have a virtual monopoly in the U.K., I don’t know how likely that is.

yep but .99p for first year transfer. so two years works out at about £5 then you can always look again at renewals.

Steve & Simon,

Thank you both. It seems GoDaddy has control of the market. Agreed I could take advantage of the 99p for first year offer but having just paid for 2 years this is probably a discussion I need to come back to in 22 months or so.

In the big picture it's not a huge amount for my website. It's just when you feel you are being ripped off I get annoyed.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

I had a reply from 123-reg about the price increase which was a load of bullsh**. They said "the Registry had increased the prices". Who is the Registry?

Probably Nominet as described in this article... http://www.wired.co.uk/article/nominet- ... price-rise

The article states the average price per annum will rise to £9. So why are 123-reg charging me £13.50? They sent a survey to complete. Guess what sort of scores they'll be getting!

I just renewed my domain with 1&1 for £8.39 incl vat for 1 year, having used the £0.99 deal a few years ago.
I think there is a slight saving if you renew for 2 years.

Roger, I did renew for 2 years. I probably won't get anywhere with them but venting my spleen at them makes me feel better. I'll look at any offers in 2020.
