Been having great fun with my new weather station (WH1080 clone) and Cumulus. Thanks to guidance found here and AndyWeb I've now got my first ever website up and running.

http://www.btinternet.com/~helicop/weather/index.htm

But of course I always want more! I found another users website

http://weather.wilmslowastro.com/

which has all the readings updating every minute. So I've got realtime.txt sent up by ftp along with the normal data, which is working as checked through ftp logging.

Now, how do I get the last step to get my web page data to auto update?

Andrew

I think it's the updating of the textual data values using Ajax that Andrew is asking about, rather than the SteelSeries gauges, but I could be wrong.

You might be right ( I thought it's Mark 's site.. steelseries andso-on but indeed the pages are updated by ajax or someting like that.)

That's exactly what I'm after, but you worry me when you mention Ajax! Ha, now I know what it means "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML".
The last coding I did was years ago with Dos Basic. I take it that the website I quoted has been modified from the original. It "looked" almost the same as my basic one, so I hoped it was just a few settings somewhere.

Yes, it looks the same, but the way it operates is completely different, and how it operates isn't really my area of expertise, so I can't offer much more than the information that it uses Ajax. You could 'view source' to get an idea of how it works...

Thanks Mark, I've done Steve's suggestion and looked at the page code. Comparing it to my original doesn't look much different, but there is obviously Very Much different. Way above my head. Thanks anyway.

Andrew,

On a completely unrelated point you need to adjust your barometric pressure. It's currently showing 1047hPa whereas the approximate pressure (adjusted for sea-level) is 1016.

Thanks Ray, that was on my todo list. Had to find out about the relative/absolute setting. The console is now set to relative, and adjusted to 1015hPa, that figure obtained from the BBC weather local page. I think its going to go down rather rapidly soon!.

Hi Andrew,

I see now that you've corrected it pressure is now dropping very rapidly at 11Mb an hour. Looks like it is going to be a wild night in Scotland!

Welcome to the forum. :)

Andrew, have a look at this script by DAJ (David Jamieson): WeatherConsole - when released, it has been a good learning experience for me.

Do not expect to understand everything at one... :) ...start by looking at the source code, playing with it, adding stuff to it, and, when comfortable with what you have done and learned, then apply the code (and your knowledge of it) to the main (index.htm) template to produce a near-real-time weather page.

This is what I have done for my main Tzouhalem-Maple Bay - Cumulus Weather PHP page.

Hi Ray,

I should have looked harder before posting. Just 2 topics down from my question is a thread by a very nice man called Synewave. Full instructions making the site do what I want. Got the wind gust and speed working so far. I think its time I found an online HTML primer, so I have some idea what I'm doing

But it raises another question (doesn't it allways?) , the timing of realtime.txt and normal Cumulus update. I'm using a WH1080 clone, which send data to the console every 48 seconds, so I have set realtime.txt and data on page update to 60 seconds. I think that any less than that would be a waste of bandwidth. I've set the normal Cumulus update to 5 minutes, because its now only updating the graphs on the trends page.

Does that make sense?

Andrew

And presumeably your Moon image ;)

None the less, IF you are happy all current data is being handled via realtime.txt, then your other more 'static' uploads could be just once per day ! (To populate things like Sun / moon rise, day length, etc.)
