New webhost required?

Post by aduncan »

I'm currently using E-Rice as a webhost ($10.00 a year), but I have a slight problem. If Cumulus is uploading, and Yawcam is uploading, Filezilla tells me that the maximum 3 connections are in use. As I'm playing about with webpage design, this is annoying.

I've been looking at some of the UK based £1.95 a month hosting sites, but there is no mention of how many ftp connections are allowed. Can anyone give me some guidance?

Try Vidahost. I use them and they are very good.

The Basic package is more than enough for a weather web site https://www.vidahost.com/web-hosting/pa ... ic-package and if you buy the 2 year package it works out at £1.20 per month.

Job done, signed up to Vidahost. Just waiting for all the changes to ripple through. I've had a couple of phone calls to them for advice, they've answered very quickly and helpfully.

Many thanks

They are very helpful and live up to their SLA's.

Have a car based forum with 20,000 users on their site for 2 years and it has gone down twice (keeps fingers crossed!!) in that time, but it always back up in 1/2 hr and they always explain what has happened!!

An update. I've gone back to E-rice. Seems that E-rice calculate bandwidth only on download, i.e. browsing. Anything uploaded is not counted. They obviously keep prices low by giving only a basic service

Vidahost count everything up or down as bandwidth, and my usage was going to exceed the allowance. The next package up put it out of my reach for what is only a hobby. Unfortunate, as I enjoyed cPanel and all the toys. I'll just have to keep my ftp'ing for evenings, when webcam images are not uploading all the time.

Don't quite understand. If you went up to the next package you qualify for 3 years for the price of 2, so that would be £58 for 3 years i.e. £19.33 per year (£.61 per month) which is well below the costs you mentioned in your first post, and there is no way you are going to use 25GB bandwidth a month surely.

Vidahost: £58 + VAT = £69.60. 3 years £69.60/36 = £1.93/month

E-rice: $10.00 (incl VAT) = £6.28. 1 year £6.28/12 = £0.52/month

I have just retired and have many hobbies, in no particular order - wife and THREE daughters, a sailing dinghy, radio controlled model aircraft, computers in general, plus other things I dabble in. Oh, and a weather station :D . so a little has to go a long way!

I get a lump sum self employed pension every April, so I may just splurge some of it on a Vidahost 3 year deal then.

I thought about it, and knew it was only a matter of time. Vidahost gave me a 10% discount to stay and upgrade. When I went to pay for it I found I had some cash in my Paypal account I'd forgotten about...

Vidahost:
Cumulus never once showed an error.
The website loaded much quicker.
cPanel has all the information and analysis I could ever need and more.

At least I know how to transfer everything this time :P
