La Crosse WS2300

Postby 6719jason » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:12 am

Hello there,

I was wondering what type of Serial to Serial cable would be required for communication between the Base Unit and Serial Port on my PC?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Jason

It should come with a cable consisting of an rj-11 on one end and a db9 on the other, about 1.5 metres. If it isn't long enough, use a straight db9-m to db9-f extension cable.

cheers,
Cheers,
Graeme.

Hi there, thank you for all your replies so far

I have just heard back from the seller who has sent me a photo of the supplied USB to Serial lead.

I reacon based on what I can see, I will need to buy this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Serial-RS232-9-Pin-Male-Female-2m-Extension-Cable-/290526832051?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item43a4bfa5b3#ht_954wt_934 to connect the base unit to the serial port on my Server.

Photo of lead provided is attached.

Jason why do you (or would you) need a RS232 extension cable - the one supplied with the station seems to be about 2 meters in length, probably long enough...

And the cable has a male USB adaptor at one end and what should be a male serial (RS232) adaptor at the other end - although the picture does not show much. Computers usually have a female serial (RS232) connector. At the most, you might need a gender converter adaptor...

All I want is to not use the supplied usb to serial converter and use a native Serial to Serial Cable.

I'm guessing I need to use a male to female serial cable...

Oops...

I should have looked at the model number - the WS-2300 is very old technology (the WS-2300 is an old LaCrosse weather station that is about 10-12 years old - I have a LaCrosse WS-2310 and that was bought about 10 years ago). As indicated by Graeme, the WS-2310 (and more likely the WS-2300) uses a cable with a RJ-11 male connector at one end (the station end) and a DB-9 serial (RS232) male connector at the other end (the computer end).

What is odd, the cable in the picture is of the USB-to-serial type - could that mean that the station has either a USB or serial connector??? Very wierd!

I see.

I'm guessing the USB end is for the PC and the Serial end is for the Base Unit. Question is... assuming I am correct, what Serial Cable do I need to buy to connect Serial to Serial...?

Jason, it is probably better that you wait until you receive the unit - this way you can look at the console and know for sure which connector type is on the unit and which type of cable will be needed...

I'm guessing the USB end is for the PC and the Serial end is for the Base Unit.

No Jason, that's not quite correct.

In fact, all LaCrosse stations are natively RS232 and some models are supplied with a USB to RS232 adapter, made by FTDI.
Your connection is by the supplied cable with an rj-11 phone plug on the LaCrosse end and a db-9 serial connector on the PC end and you should only need an extension if you plan on putting the station more than a couple of metres from your pc.
Of course, if you haven't a serial port on your PC, you might be stuck - although there are PCI cards available to add serial ports to a PC but if you use a laptop I'm not sure.

My opinion of the usb adapter is that it's best left in the box, as there seems to be a serious timing problem with it, causing erroneous data with any software you try to use with it.
On a brighter note my WS-2355 unit has performed without fault now since November 2009, when I scrapped the usb adapter.

Here's some more discussion on the subject of using a usb to serial converter with LaCrosse stations:

Cheers,
Cheers,
Graeme.
