Some time this weekend I hope to make the first alpha/preview/demo version of Cumulus 2 available - possibly in the next few hours.

I'll post a bit more about this shortly.

A few important notes about the first release of Cumulus 2:

You won't be able to use it instead of version 1. It lacks a number of important features, such as internet uploads. Also, it will have lots of bugs. It may fail to install; it may not run; it may not talk to your weather station; it may crash. I have only tested it with my Vantage Pro 2 and my Fine Offset station. To begin with, it may not work at all with Oregon or La Crosse stations, but hopefully I'll be able to sort that out fairly quickly.

You will need to be running Windows XP SP2 or a later version of Windows.

Other pre-requisites:

  • .Net Framework 3.5 SP1
  • Windows Installer 4.5
  • SQL Server 2008 Express

You may have some of these installed already. The installer will attempt to download and install any that you don't have - this may take some time.

You can install Cumulus 2 on the same machine as Cumulus 1; they won't interfere with each other - but of course you can't run both at the same time (unless you have something like VirtualVP for Davis stations). When you first run Cumulus 2 it will offer you the option to import your existing Cumulus data. In the subsequent file selection dialogue, select your cumulus.ini file. Be careful when uninstalling that you don't uninstall Cumulus 1 instead! That should appear in add/remove files as Cumulus 1.8.8 (for example), so you should be able to tell which is which.

Cumulus stores data in the database in the following units: Timestamps in UTC, wind speed in m/s, pressure in mb, rain in mm, and temperatures in degrees C. You can choose to have them displayed in other units, and you can change units without affecting the stored data. But note that if you view the data with the database editor, you will see the data in the default units, which may be a bit confusing - particularly the timestamps! In a future version, this will change.

Please report all problems and observations and suggested tweaks to the existing stuff (start a new topic in the Cumulus 2 section of the forum), but my reply may be that I haven't written that bit yet (e.g. there is no 'extra data' yet). It's probably best not to start asking for enhancements yet; I still have quite a bit to do to catch up with version 1.

Don't rely on being able to keep any data that this release creates. I may not be sticking with SQL Server, for example, or the database structure may change completely, and I won't be providing import/export from this version.

*** NOTE *** I will have a new version available later today (16th Sept) which doesn't require MS SQL Server, so you're probably better waiting for that.

You can download it here:

Have fun, hopefully not too many problems, and be gentle with me :)

[Edited to correct link - thanks, David!]

I forgot to mention that it will/should create a file called trace.txt on your desktop when it runs. Sorry if this is annoying. It may be useful for any problems, and I wanted to make it easy to find.

When it crashes, it may create a file called bugreport.txt - I'm not actually sure where that will get put!

Yes, same as mine.

Are you getting wind displayed now? Is there actually any wind where you are?

Steve it's running like an Alpha. :D
Sometimes it will work, sometimes not.
I do like what I see though.
Right now after it reads the data it freezes up.
Closing the program and reopening it sometimes reads the data and other times it won't do anything.
It was working fine until I changed the units to Western numbers. Since then it's really quirky.
I probably won't keep it running because it's too unstable.
Using a VP2.
OS is XP-SP2

Excellent - it's all going to plan :)

I have to admit I haven't run it much with my VP2, I'm mainly using my Fine Offset for testing.

Yes, that's fine; I just wanted people to give it a quick try to flush out the first bugs, and there have been enough of those to keep me going for now :)
