New IP Camera

Hi all.

When I first built my site I had a webcam running through a piece of software (IP Timelapse) that would manage the screenshots and webcam stream for me. It broke though and after much fussing about I removed it from my site.

A friend recently showed me his new IP security camera set-up so I treated myself and replaced my existing old security system with a new IP system which has much better image quality. I had a spare camera so set about finding ways to utilise it for my website.

What I've ended up with is a still image on the home page that is clickable to a streaming image run by a company called IPCAMLIVE. I send them one stream upon request and they re-broadcast it up to 100 times for free (more streams available at a cost). This means the camera and my internet connection don't get bogged down.

My website is here: www.westonweather.co.uk and I'd appreciate if people could let me know if they can see the static image and the stream loads when they click the image. I have had to do some jiggery pokery with the ports on my network as port 80 is already in use the webserver that runs the site, so 8080 has been used for the webcam. It seems to work fine for me, but would really like a few people to check it for me please?

I am happy to share information on the IP camera used and how I managed to get both a static image directly out of it and a stream for IPCAMLIVE to rebroadcast if that is of interest to people.

Amazing how quickly 'new' standards trickle down nowadays.

The resoloution / bitrate is good enough to able to see the anemometer cups spinning !

Image comes up fine, but a lot of buffering on the stream. Looks pretty good though on Chrome and Win7.

On IE11 the image fails to appear but the live stream works OK with some initial buffering.

FireFox image works fine and live stream is OK but again buffering before it loads.

That's curious as I'm using IE11, it's what I set it all up on, but also use Firefox.

The buffering I can't help - it's down to the speed of the free package from IPCamLive I think. It's not worth paying 25 Euros a month (whatever that is in real money) just so a few people can watch clouds go over my roof

Live streaming - not such a good idea. There will always be someone or something that hammers the bandwidth! Looks like someone (or more than 1 person) left the live stream running for a 24 hour period. Why?! I used a tremendous amount of bandwidth that, if allowed to continue, would eventually land me with an acceptable use policy warning from my ISP.

I've come up with a plan B that works and means that situation can't occur. I hid the camera behind the firewall and immediately saw the packets transmitted from the LAN drop. My webcam page now has a snapshot that is updated, a current day timelapse and a previous day timelapse.

The software I had used previously: https://iptimelapse.com/
It allows you to superimpose current weather conditions and is very configurable.

The webcam page is here: http://www.westonweather.co.uk/webcam.php
