Incorrect rain spike removal with 1.9.4 beta 1080

Post by SamiS »

Hi,

Just noticed that my error log was showing as below:

27.6.2013 18:29:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 46,80 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:30:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 50,36 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:31:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 50,40 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:32:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 57,60 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:33:01 : Ignoring high rain rate: 46,80 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:34:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 43,20 mm/hr
27.6.2013 18:36:00 : Ignoring high rain rate: 46,80 mm/hr

This happened during very heavy rain on thunderstorm. It has logged 39,6mm/h, so it seems that it cuts all over 40mm as spikes. However my spike removal settings are set to ignore rain when it exceeds 400,0 mm/h. So is this maybe a decimal placement bug somewhere on spike removal code?

My station is a fine offset, and cumulus is running on english xp sp3.

Please zip up the diags folder and attach it. Could you also please attach a screenshot of your calibration settings screen?

Your rain rate spike setting is actually 40; it's just the edit controls which are showing the wrong values - note the multiplier values, they are actually all set to 1. This could be an issue with your Windows user settings being different to your Windows system settings. I put a change in build 1081 to cater for this - could you please try the latest build. Once it's running, open the calibration settings screen and see what the effect is. You may need to re-enter the values.

AFAIK all my locale settings are finnish except the "non unicode programs" setting is english. All regional settings have been made while installing the os, and only one user account exists.

This issue with Cumulus has not always been present, since I have logged higher rain rates from years 2011 and early 2012. But I can't remember when you introduced the spike removal. :)

I'll upgrade anyway, but how do I find out if it helps? This kind of rainfall is very rare phenomenon here, so it might be summer 2014 before this happens again.

EDIT: Now I understood what you just said. Earlier I was a bit puzzled about the multiplier "1000", and also wondered that the temperature spike value was quite high, since I had a faint memory of putting it to 3'C instead of 30'C.

Upgraded, and it seems to make a difference. At least it shows now correct 3'C temp spike and 40mm/hr rain spike settings. And multipliers were converted to 1,000 (comma is a decimal separator here). If I understand correctly what happened here, maybe it is probably best that everyone with recent betas check their spike removal settings? Or could this problem be even present on 1.9.3 final?

Thank you for a rapid response and keep up the great work.

It's only a problem with the way the settings are interpreted by the edit controls. I changed them in build 1080 because the old ones caused problem on a few systems. Unfortunately there's a bug in the ones I replaced them with which appears on systems where the Windows user settings are not the same as the Windows system settings. I changed the code for the edit controls in build 1081 to apply the fix. The problem is not in the code which reads the settings from cumulus.ini, nor is it in the code which applies the settings to the rainfall rate. Anyone who hasn't actually tried to change their settings using build 1080 won't have a problem.
