Build 975 - Rain Threshold value

Post by RayProudfoot »

Hi Steve,

Using Build 975 I have entered RainDayThreshold=-1 in the Station section of Cumulus.ini. This equates to 0.01" as the starting point for determining a rain day.

I'm still chewing over whether I would like to increase this to ignore dew collection when on an otherwise dry day 0.01" of dew then counts towards my rain day count. Setting it to 0.02" would reduce my rain day count in the current month from 17 to 13. You need all the help you can get when you live near Manchester!

If I want to set the threshold to 0.02" what would that new entry change to?
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

That's the default, so you don't actually need to add it. And it does actually create that entry itself, so be careful you don't end up with two entries, which might cause confusion in future - I don't know whether the first or last entry is the value that you end up with.

0.02

I haven't actually tested this setting with inches, so it'll be interesting to see what happens...

It definitely didn't create that entry when I started that build. Anyway, changing it to 0.02 has correctly reduced my rain day count to 13.

It writes the cumulus.ini file when you change any settings, or close it down.

Ah, I was expecting it to be created when Cumulus started. No matter. It looks to be working okay. This should help others who want to try it.

I closed Cumulus and checked the entry. It now shows RainDayThreshold=0.0199999995529652

Interesting it should convert 0.02 to that.

It's because most decimal floating point numbers can't be stored exactly in binary. It will round the value to 3 decimal places (i.e. 0.020) before it uses it.

Either; they're exactly the same.

Is -1 means that when it rains it will count 0.2 mm now than 0.3 mm that it counted before?

The threshold was zero before, not 0.3 mm.

That would depend on you rainguage and station really. If the guage will only measure amounts of 0.3mm then the new threshold feature is irrelevant since the station will only record minimum of 0.3mm.

However, for those of us who have modified our gauges to measure smaller amounts (mine will measure 0.1mm or 0.111mm to be precise), then the threshold setting of 0.2mm will omit days with 0.1mm from the registered raindays.

Nice feature Steve.

Ok, my mistake, i understand now.The station measures 0.3 mm and it can not be changed from the panel.
Is it possible to change it from cumulus to count 0.2 mm or it can`t be done?
