Is there a quick-n-easy way to disable/hide the average wind pointer?

Not easily!
you would either need to edit the steelseries.js library file and comment out the drawing code in there for the pointer and the associated LCD, or use the "Compass" gauge from the full SteelSeries library and lose the LCD displays and the ability to show the sector colouring.

Try as I might, I couldn't get any pointer to disappear, let alone the one in question.
The good news for me is that I decided I like the looks of the average wind pointer better than having the rose data in the direction gauge anyway so it's a moot point now.
