Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

RestartIfUnpluggged, RestartIfDataStopped

Post by BCJKiwi »

It seems that Cumulus1 is restarting from time to time. This has only become apparent through the testing of CumulusMX. Previously I thought there may have been some interaction between 1 and MX but with CumulusMX on a separate PC, I now discover that Cumulus1 is unable to get data from the console and restarts. This is completely random as it will go for days without problem but then stop and restart a couple of times over 2 or 3 hours and then be OK for days. Every once in a while maybe weeks apart, it will not reconnect after a restart and shuts down. Usually a restart witll fix it but if not, re-seating the USB cable in the PC will sort the issue.
The USB cable is running over a Cat5 extender which in theory is transparent to the system as the usb port driver is for the port in the logger.

I have no idea if the issue is with a connection somewhere, the PC Cumulus1 is running in, or with the genuine Davis 'Green Dot' logger.

So, I am wondering if RestartIfUnpluggged, RestartIfDataStopped and ConfirmClose will be implemented soon? As far as I can tell thy are not implement yet. I'm pretty much ready to go live with MX but am reluctant to do so without the restart functions working since it seems I have an unreliable data feed - which I will be trying to sort out!

Thanks

I don't know if they will be implemented soon, but hopefully I will be able to work out a way to do them reliably. Regarding the 'restart' ones, there are some suggestions on StackExchange for how to get a console app to restart itself, but I need to check that they work OK on all platforms.

Note that the 'unplugged' one does not apply to Davis stations, it can only work on stations which are driven directly as a USB HID. And I need to investigate whether I can detect 'USB unplugged' at all with MX.

Thanks,
I'll have to work on trouble shooting the USB drop outs without losing too much data to the internet. Have a few alternate ways to connect the system if necessary.
