I thought all was well, then I hovered over the gauges and only see an empty frame, not an image of the trends graph:

I have a horrible feeling I am missing something very obvious...

I didn't turn off the popup graphs setting in the supplied gauges.js file. MX does not supply any fixed graph images, so you can either turn off the setting in scripts/gauges.js on your web site:

showPopupGraphs : true, //If pop-up data is displayed, show the graphs?

Change true to false. Or, you can supply images some other way, e.g. by using the PHP which Mark has supplied. See https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13189
