New to Cumulus trying to install on Rpi advice needed please

Topics about the Beta trials up to Build 3043, the last build by Cumulus's founder Steve Loft. It was by this time way out of Beta but Steve wanted to keep it that way until he made a decision on his and Cumulus's future.

New to Cumulus trying to install on Rpi advice needed please

Post by M6YHW-ROB »

Hi all,

New to the group and Cumulus other than had it installed on PC for less than a week now,
I want to install it on a Rpi1 and so far have the up to date debians and mono installed, i'm now stuck as to where and how i get the Cumulus on to the pi. on other groups i'm in for ADS-B i compiled an image with all necessary programs for the end user to just install my image and all they had to do was finish the install with two lines of copy paste text from my install sheet with their already assigned username, lon and lat etc for the groups radar / server requirements.
Is there not an image for cumulus than anyone can simply install?

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks
Rob

I'm fairly new at this so take my advice with a grain of salt...

I don't think there is any "install" available.

Does rPi1 have USB? Just zip your CumulusMX folder and transfer it to the rPi on a thumb drive.

I personally use the built in VNC Server and simply zip the CumulusMX folder and transfer it to my rPi with VNC's built in file transfer utility. Unzip it to the root "pi" directory and start it with "sudo mono CumulusMX.exe". You need the client on whatever device you are connecting to the rPi with as well (You do not need to register it or sign up for anything for it to work): https://www.realvnc.com/en/download/vnc/

Actually I start it with a desktop shortcut. On desktop, Create New --> Empty File. Then right click on it and open with Text Editor and enter the text below, editing it for whatever you name it and change the icon to whatever you have or just delete that line.

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Comment=
Terminal=true
Name=CmX
Exec=sudo mono CumulusMX.exe
Type=Application
Icon=/home/pi/CumulusMX/MyIcons/cmx.ico
X-KeepTerminal=true
Path=/home/pi/CumulusMX
GenericName=Starts Cumulus MX
StartupNotify=false
Name[en_US]=CmX

The download is an attachment in an announcement in this section of the forum, the post title is "Cumulus MX Announcements and Download - PLEASE READ FIRST". There is a link to that post in the pink 'news' box near the top of the forum pages, where it says "See this post for download".

I have now installed and must say it looks pretty damm sexy the MX version on the pi.
Really needs to be on a Pi2 or Pi3 as although its running it can be a tough laggy and needs a bit more warp drive.
Now my next question please if i may is making a website with my stations data, i believe it can be uploaded somewhere?
I do have my own domain i could use so any tips would be appreciated please.

Thanks Rob

The engine doesn't normally need much power, I didn't find it laggy running on a first generation Pi. Or do you mean when running a browser on the Pi itself rather than remotely on another more powerful device? That's quite likely to be laggy on a Pi1, it's not really up to the job for browsing.

There's quite a lot of information about uploading to a web site in the wiki.

The original Pi isn't much use for running a browser, particularly for something like the MX user interface, it's really only up to running the engine and viewing the UI from a PC or whatever.

Hi all.

I have the dashboard on the pc working as it should.
I seem to be not doing something correctly as showing the website details now?

Can anyone lend me some advice on what i have not done or uploaded to the weather subdomin i created please

Have you tried restarting Cumulus? If so turn on FTP logging and look at ftplog.txt

It may also be useful to give a link to your web site and show your settings

Hi thanks again,

ok ftp loging turned on now,
restarted cumulusmx on rpi.
web address is http://www.weather.fotoefex.co.uk

When i click on the url i get this

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

I only have the following in the weather folder =

Images
js
lib
weatherstyle.css

i have checked the ftp settings in cumulusmx and all is well, not sure where the ftp logging .txt file is found to check output?
thanks in advance
