server key changed and can no longer upload weather data

Post by Alan Kaylor Cline »

I have been using Cumulus for several years and have been uploading my weather data with no problem.

A couple of weeks ago, the server I was using had to be replaced and so the server key changed. Since then, I cannot get Cumulus to connect. The error that is reported is just "FTP connect error". I have tried looking at the ftp log file, but it is so big Notepad won't open it. I can open it in Wordpad, but I cant find dates on the log entries. I am running Windows 7.

I have tried:

- Using Putty to ssh to the server to establish a connection to it for the first time. This works.
- Using FileZilla to connect to the server. This works.

These two suggest that there is not a general problem getting to the server.

Also tried:

- Uninstalling and reinstalling Cumulus, both to make sure I had the most recent version and in hopes I could get rid of any cached keys. This had no effect.

- Telling Cumulus to connect to a different server (that I use for other things). I figured that there'd be no issue with a key conflict with this new server. But I get the same error.

Any suggestions?

Firstly download Notepad++ and use that.

then zip up your diags and repost them here for Steve to take a look.

I take it the Server that was replace was your Webserver? or the server Cumulus is running on?

Try deleting the ftplog.txt file and then running Cumulus just long enough for one attempted update.

I have to admit that I don't know what a 'server key' is.

Is it possible that the new server requires secure FTP?

Attached is the ftp log from a single attempt.

Yes. I believe the site requires secure ftp. However, it did a month ago as well, and Cumulus was working fine.

Yes, it appears to expect secure FTP:

07:36:01:285 ! HighLevelAsync 0
07:36:01:287 05ADFD80 Socket handle created 704
07:36:01:287 TWSocket will connect to 192.147.236.5:22
07:36:01:360 05ADFD80 TriggerDataSent 704
07:36:01:444 FTP Response: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.2 FreeBSD-20160310
07:36:01:444 >|SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.2 FreeBSD-20160310|

Cumulus 1 doesn't have secure FTP. Either the server didn't require secure FTP previously, or perhaps you were using some other method to upload, e.g. invoking an external program.

Well, thanks for your response, but does this mean that NO Cumulus users around the world are using secure ftp (unless, as you say
they use an external program to upload)?

That sort of amazes me.

So, can you help with these, please:

1. Can you point me to servers that do not require secure ftp from which I could get an account?
2. Can you direct me to someone who knows about using an external ftp program with Cumulus?

Thanks so much.

The cost of a component which would do secure FTP was several hundred pounds, and I had already spent thousands of pounds on software tools and components for Cumulus.

Cumulus MX supports FTP over SSL/TLS (but not SSH FTP).

I have a server which allows secure ftp but doesn't insist on it - https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11876. I am sure there are many others, because I see lots of Cumulus 1 ftp logs.
