If it doesn’t work automatically with the existing code, there’s nothing you can do to make it work.

Not any time soon.
I had a very quick look at the developer information for this, and they seemed to be crowing about not breaking compatibility (which would be unusual for Twitter) so it’s surprising that it doesn’t just work. Or perhaps they mean that no changes are required to allow 140 character tweets to carry on working. If that’s the case, I’m sure that situation won’t last for long.
