Phantom Last 24 hrs

Postby Herbaldew » Sun Nov 12, 2017 3:42 pm

Yesterday afternoon Cumulus 1 showed that it had rained .01 inch. Neither of my two consoles indicated this. Weatherlink did not indicate this. CumulusMX did not indicate this.

I deleted the data and backup folders and replaced with backups from before this happened (I have tried backups from multiple dates). When I start Cumulus after doing this it shows rainfall of .01 inch within the past hour or two no matter what backup I use. This happened yesterday and is happening today, though when this .01 or rain fell changes. Again, this shows nowhere but on Cumulus 1. I can edit this out of the various logs, but still Cumulus shows .01 inch in the last 24 hrs.

I am editing it out of dayfile.txt, Nov17log.txt and today.ini. Where is Cumulus 1 getting this .01 inch from?

Thanks

If you zip up the diags folder and attach it, I’ll take look.

Note that things like rain last hour and rain last 24 hours are determined using figures read from the monthly log file when Cumulus starts up (and then historical values of the rain counter are held internally for the purposes of these calculations). With that in mind, does this only happen when starting Cumulus? I seem to recall an issue like this after startup, caused by comparing the rounded values in the log files with the current rain counter, but I thought I had fixed that. Perhaps not in 1.9.4, only in MX.

This is with the backup and Diags folders emptied, data from 1 November backup, started Cumulus and let it finish loading everything, then shut it down.

Program does not show any rain since 10 November when it did actually rain, but still comes up with .01 inch for last 24 hours.

This time it is not showing any rain today or yesterday where as originally posted it kept showing that is had rained .01 inch within a couple hours.

It looks like you used a backup from 11 November rather than 1 November.

I can see that it calculated these after it had finished downloading the logger data, based on the existing data:

11/12/2017 12:33:25.577 : Rain last hour: 0.00
11/12/2017 12:33:25.577 : Rain last 24 hour: 0.01

I can see that the rain last hour figure is correct, because the rain counter was at 44.61 at 11:45 pm yesterday, and was still at 44.61 at 12:34 today when you closed it down. I can't say any more than that because you deleted the diags files for some reason.

What does the November log file show for the 'total rain counter' for entries around 12 midday to 1pm yesterday?

Is this your normal way of running Cumulus 1 - starting it up just long enough to download logger entries and then closing it down again immediately? The station doesn't make the same information available from logger data as it does from live data, so Cumulus has to do quite a bit of calculating things and trying to keep in step when it starts up.

It would be easier to track down the cause of this issue if you stopped editing the data logs, deleting diagnostic information, and rewinding using backups!

I could of messed that first run up. This one is for sure a run with the backup from somewhere between 30 Oct and 1 Nov. It shows .01 inch today and in the past 24 hours on the main screen.

Normal operation for me is the use CMX for full time use as a display mechanism for my PCs and mobile. I use WeatherLink and CM1 solely for record keeping. So yes, every so often I close CMX and open WL and CM1 in turn to update their data files and back them up.

The November log file shows 0 since the actual last rain on the 10th. I cannot find any mention of the .01 inch anywhere except the Diags file.

I just wanted to know where CM1 was getting the last 24 hr figure from - I didn't mean for you to have to try and diagnose anything :) It looks to me like something is going on between my data logger and CM1. Maybe it will clear up after 24 hours pass or if it bothers me too much, I will clear the logger and see what happens.

There are a number of issues at play here. There is a bug in the Davis DLL which Cumulus 1 uses, where it doesn't download the latest logger entry. So, given the way you are using Cumulus, if there was any rain recorded in that last missing entry, it won't get included until the next time you run Cumulus, and so the data will be 'shifted'.

There also appears to be an issue with downloading data from your logger. In this latest run, the last entry available was for 11:30 today, even though it was 13:24 when you ran Cumulus:

11/12/2017 13:28:12.841 : VP2: processing logger data entry 1035 for 11/12/2017 11:30:00 AM
11/12/2017 13:28:12.841 : ih=45.0 oh=63.0 it=68.3 ot=43.9 wc=43.9 dp=32.1 pr=1032.581 wg=3.0 ws=1.0 wd=0 rt=0.00 rr=0.00
11/12/2017 13:28:12.841 : hi=43.2 thwi=43.2 thswi=-3.28E4 idp=46.1 ihi=66.5 uv=1.3 sol=234 et=0.0
11/12/2017 13:28:12.880 : Rain counter = 44.5997009277344
11/12/2017 13:28:12.958 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 11/12/2017 11:30:00 AM raindaystart = 44.5997009277344 rain counter = 44.5997009277344
11/12/2017 13:28:12.958 : Rain last hour: 0.00
11/12/2017 13:28:14.139 : VP2: Setting raintotal from current station value: 44.6100006103516
11/12/2017 13:28:14.139 : Current rain counter: 44.610
11/12/2017 13:28:14.139 : Start of day counter: 44.600
11/12/2017 13:28:14.139 : Rain today so far: 0.000
11/12/2017 13:28:14.139 : Rain multiplier = 1.000
11/12/2017 13:28:14.176 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 11/12/2017 11:30:00 AM raindaystart = 44.5997009277344 rain counter = 44.6100006103516
11/12/2017 13:28:14.178 : VP2: End of history download

At the end of the download there was clearly a discrepancy in the counter as the current value it read from the console was 44.61 but the calculated figure (for 11:30) was 44.60 (rounded). It's possible that it's this issue with missing logger entries that is causing the odd figures you are seeing (assuming that the same thing has happened previously).

So it's possible that way you are using Cumulus may be exposing a bug in Cumulus, or the Davis DLL, or a problem with your logger, or all of the above.
