Automatic shutdown...

Post by Tidalwave123 »

I run Cumulus 24/7. I feed data to NOAA/Weather Service and also several independent sites. My old Windows XP ran with 'never off' power settings, using a UPS unit. However, about every two weeks, the PC would 'lock-up' with Cumulus stalled. I would have to power reboot the PC and Cumulus. The Davis Logger would immediately restart and load Cumulus with the missing data. I used CCleaner to delete any extraneous temp files that would build up. The PC was only used for Cumulus and to manually send data via FireFox to a local TV station.

I switched Cumulus over to a new PC running Windows 8 64-bit with additional RAM. I set power settings to 'never off'.
The new PC Windows also 'shuts down' about every 10-14 days and has to be power re-booted.

I would appreciate any help to fix this problem.

First of all I take it you are running Windows 8.1 (with 8.1 update installed too) and not just Windows 8?

Take a look at the example here:

https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/a ... px?ID=3875

make sure you go into the Advnaced settings of the Power plan and disable any and everything that affects sleep.

you will also need to make sure Power management is unticked in ANY USB devices/hubs listed ( in device manager, USB, select each hub/port and select Properties, Power Management) as this could affect your Davis USB logger too.

untick the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." in Power Management.

Also do this for your network port too.

Also in the Bios, make sure C States is disabled along with any power management (S3/S5 Sleep states) and or Speed stepping.

Also in an Admin command prompt window run the following:

powercfg /H off

that will turn of Hibernation. then run:

powercfg /A

this list all your sleep states on the machine.

this is a list from my Windows 10 box (not a 24/7 PC) as an example.

Code: Select all

C:\>powercfg /A
The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Hibernate
        Hibernation has not been enabled.

    Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Hybrid Sleep
        Hibernation is not available.

    Fast Startup
        Hibernation is not available.

Code: Select all

C:\>powercfg /l
