Which software for first time user?

Post by Ro3bert »

I've had an Oregon Scientific Professional WMR200 Weather Center for some years now but have never contemplated getting software for my PC (HP Touchsmart) using Windows 10 V 10.1.16299 Build 16299) until now.

Unfortunately there is a small situation; I don't have the USB cable to connect the PC to the Base Station. I think it was supposed to come with the package but that was a long time ago and it doesn't seem to be anywhere amongst my many extra phone lines, USB cables, power lines and many others I thought I'd never use. The User Manual shows the 1 x USB cable but there is no part number with it or, for that matter, any other part listed.

I'd like to download the Cumulus software but am reluctant until I finally find the correct USB cable. :groan:

If anyone knows the correct one (the connector at the base station is larger than those used on cameras) I'd appreciate the information.

Oh, and one other item. The base station is in the living room and the PC is in my bedroom approx 16ft away. I'd probably need 20ft but don't know how much of a run would be the longest usable. I'd be concerned about line losses.

Thanks for any feedback, Robert

Solution found. Found the cable I need in another box of worms, actually three of them.

Now I will have to move the base station to the bedroom and find a place to put it. Also have to decide whether to use the table top PC or dedicate one to the unused lap tops so it can run 24/7.

Thks a look at running MX on a Raspberry Pi3, they are only $35 US plus the MicroSD card and a power supply. It saves running the PC all the time and it works quite will when set up properly. You can set up a remote desktop for it and still get into it if you need to and Raspian is not that hard to use. Power requirements are next to nothing as well.
