Ah ok, so if at 9:00am tomorrow morning my station has recorded 20mm, it will record it against tomorrow's date (the 28th) whereas BOM will record it against the 27th, is that correct?

I think it's the other way round; Cumulus counts the period from midnight to 0900 as part of the previous day, as per UK Met Office practice, which is logical since 15 of the hours were from that day and only 9 from the following day. I'm not even sure that the BOM credits all of the data ending at 0900 to the same day; or maybe I'm thinking of another country.

If it's just a case of using 'today' instead of 'yesterday' for everything, that's not too hard to fix.

Yes, its the other way around. It isnt generally a huge problem, other than messing up monthly and annual rainfall figures (or temp records) if it rains at the ends of each period

The bom only show rain since 9am in there observations all other max & mins are since midnight, but for official archive data the max & min temp recorded is between 9am & 9am dated the start of the 9am day. A bit of a mixed bag if you ask me.

Thanks for that Gerard. At least now I'm in sync with you and Gordon! ;)

Do you keep your rollover time at 9:00am all year or switch to 10:00am during daylight savings?

No, I have "use 10am in summer" unchecked as I don't understand exactly what it does but have not had any problems with the start or end of daylight saving.

After shamefully hijacking Snupples thread, I have changed my rollover time to 9:00am and on Cumulus both rainfall since 00:00 is the same as rainfall since 9:00am even though there was rainfall before 9:00am. I also use <#rmidnight> on my webcam images and that is the same as <#rfall> too.

Is this what you were experiencing Snupple?

Could you zip up the diags folder and attach it, please?

It's possible that this is a 'first of the month' bug. As it happens, I found one of those myself on Select-A-Graph this morning.

Yep will do. I was just in the process of capturing these screens to show what I meant.

EDIT: sorry just added the entire folder.

It looked in the correct file (April) for the midnight rain counter when you started it up:

1/05/2011 10:12:38.906 : Finding midnight rain from logfile C:\Cumulus\data\Apr2011log.txt
1/05/2011 10:12:38.906 : Midnight rain found = 3863.69995117188

But the figure it claims to have found is the same as the start of day (i.e. 0900) total:

1/05/2011 10:12:38.890 : Todayfileraindaystart = 3863.69995117188

So that can't be right. Could you attach your April and May log files, please?

Was it showing the correct value for rain since midnight before you restarted it just after 10:00?

Will do.

This might help answer your question... I've noticed another strange thing with my rainfall today. I embed <#rmidnight> in my webcam images and when replaying the last 24 hours: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~storerfa ... 4hour.html at 10:14am today the rain value is 2.0mm then at 10:20 it is 1.5mm but there was no change at 9:00am.

Might be related, it looks like it switched from <#rmidnight> to <#rfall> at the restart.

Oops. Spot the deliberate mistake. Apr2011log.txt should be Apr11log.txt. The file doesn't exist, so it goes on to look at the current log (May) and uses the first entry in that as the first entry after midnight. So I think this is indeed a 'first of the month only' bug (i.e., if you restart Cumulus on the first of the month it gets the additional 'rain since midnight' value wrong for the rest of that day).

No, I have "use 10am in summer" unchecked as I don't understand exactly what it does but have not had any problems with the start or end of daylight saving.

From my understanding the 10:00am is included as it equates to 9am GMT during the Day-Light-Saving period. The UK Met Office standard day is defined as from 9am GMT, not 9am local time.
A minor benefit is that by using the 10am selection the days are always 24 hours long, even when the clocks change.
