Just for information, my ISP 'PlusNet' cut off my account on Tuesday because I had set the 'real time' update too frequent. OK, perhaps every 5 seconds was a bit enthusiastic but the page looked really good. At the moment, after persuading them that a regular update from me was legitimate, I have been reconnected but I have been asked to reduce the update rate whilst they sort out how to handle the FTP overload. I've turned off real time update and reduced the page update to 15 minutes in order to stay 'on air'.

I mention this because they advised me that a number of automatic weather station users were causing this effect and also because the reaction to the perceived threat to their systems was quite drastic - by changing my password they completely cut off my FTP access, webmail and Outlook access, internet of course and funnily emough, access to telephone support. Other ISPs may not want to consider adjusting their management systems and may reject/disconnect their users.

If you are using a frequent real time update and you suddenly lose your Internet connection, it may be worth checking that you haven't been 'protected'.

It has been suggested that if the FTP logged on and stayed connected - sending updated files over an established link - it may not trigger the overload they experienced.

Or, am I the only one affected by this?

John

That's how the realtime ftp works, unless you configure it not to, by setting an RTdisconnectcount value in cumulus.ini

John, this appears to be the trend all service providers are moving to (new policy, after a recent update to their server and control panel software - it will be more evident with free hosting services), that is if a users FTP uploads too much data or data too often, the user's access to the server is automatically cancelled (too much load on the share server); depending on the knowledge of the IT people, the access can be cancelled for a few minutes, a few hours or until the use contact the service department.

That trend started in the USA about 4-5 months ago and has been 'spreading' rapidly - the trend is not unlike (very similar to) the 'throttling' trend started a year or so by phone companies and Internet providers - it is way cheaper for the companies to limit the users' access than having to purchase/install new servers.

I am with Plusnet and the only issue I have had is not being able to connect to the server for random lengths of time, I used to get errors frequently but have not had any for a while, possibly since my line speed was upgraded from 5.5 to 17 Mbps.

I upload at 15 mins and have all 3 realtime boxes ticked and set to 30 seconds.
