Almost impossible since the babies often arrive airborne. But you could try stopping them crawling up the pole by wrapping one of those sticky bands that they use on plants around the pole.

I have also heard spiders hate, and stay clear of Peppermint oil or vinegar.

I too have this issue, I've used a surface spray that you use around the house that says it'll last "6 'months" works alright in the dry parts of the year but avoid getting it on operating parts of the sensor such as reed switches, if you have a UV or solar sensor or both, avoid spray contact on those as it can leave a residue on it and alter readings.

In Australia, common black house spiders will often make under the rain gauge home, and being both black they can be difficult to see. I also get the odd huntsman spider on there too but they don't put webs on it.

I sure would be interested in a solution. During dry periods (yes, we actually get them in Oregon), spiders get inside the rain gauge housing and build nests that keep the tipping bucket from tipping. I sprayed the inside with bug killer, but that only lasts for awhile. Sooner or later the spiders, and the problem, return. :(
