Hey, cheers, where did you get yours from? Cost?

I've looked around and sent a few emails, If i were to get it over seas any of the versions are a go.. because the us one comes with the metric adapter for the rain gauge. Doesn't look like there are any freq restrictions as I few other brands are sold here that are in the 900mhz band. :D

Thanks for the confirmation. It does indeed look like the 902-915MHz part of the wider 902-928MHz frequency band of the US spec models is not permitted for use in Australia.

I suspect that the reason that this limitation is not spelled out in the Davis catalogue is that it applies only to stations sold for Australia and is therefore unique to this territory. And AIUI the necessary modification is made by the official Australian distributor. Each of the other three main station types (ie US/EU/UK) are distinct production types (although EU and UK are identical for wireless frequency, differing only in mains adapter and documentation language) - and even the UK version is actually sold in multiple territories, where the UK style mains adapter has been used historically.

So US Version is out of the question..

I'm Confused

By my post? Sorry! This was just a follow-up to an earlier post in this thread speculating about whether Australia allows use of the full US spec 900MHz band for Vantage stations or legally permits only part of that band. The info that nugget posted seems to confirm that the second of these two options is the case. So:

In countries following the US spec to the letter, the VP2 stations can hop right around the band 902-928MHz, ie a band 26MHz wide.

But in Australia only 915-928MHz (ie 13MHz wide) seems to be legally allowed and so I'm surmising that only Davis station sourced fom the official Australian distributor (or suitably converted by them, which is a service that I think they offer - though presumably at a price) can legally be used there.

(NB I'm guessing that this limitation is because Australia uses GSM-900 as one of its cellphone protocols, which uses the 890-915MHz band for its uplink and so the 902-915MHz part of the US VP2 spectrum would overlap into this cellphone band and cause interference.)

Edit: I see that Darknstormy has edited his initial response in the preceding post and so the original quote has disappeared and been replaced by a link to a similar discussion that covers the same ground as I was speculating about here.

Bought mine from Ecowatch (the Australian agents for Davis http://www.davisinstruments.com.au). It was a wireless fan aspirated model 6153AU. Including the 6510 Weatherlink USB Datalogger it was $1364. That's without delivery as I was able to drive down and pick it up.
The rain gauge comes as the US 0.1" version but in the little kit of bits you get the metric conversion for it. Easy to do.

Same in New Zealand. One of the cell phone networks here operates over the frequency range of the US models. Some buyers do import from the US anyway, they are usually safe doing this if in rural areas. I didn't risk it, being in a highly populated area. If Vodafone picks such activity up, one must stop operating the offending equipment (or get it converted to a legal transmitting frequency)

Lyle,

Good choice. You wont regret it.

I was surprised at the size of the unit when I got it out of the box. Much larger and heavier than the FO units. I had to get a more rigid pole to mount the unit on before I installed it. You'll see a vast improvement in the anemometer and rainfall readings.

Enjoy

Thanks Dan,

All ordered , and its already in the post EcoWatch are great super friendly and on the ball with postage.

Can anyone answer How long I can leave the unit running on the data logger before i need to plug it in to the pc before I loose my data?

I know you can set intervals, so what intervals do people run.. is it a waste taking a reading every 1 min when not connected to the pc? your thoughts?

Cheers..

Now to make my pole stronger :D & install a Solar spot light to shine on it at night... hehe

EDIT!!!

I found it 1 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 42 hours
5 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 days
10 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 days
15 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 days
30 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 53 days
60 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 106 days
120 Minute Archive Interval . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 213 days

but would still love your thoughts :D

Mine is set at 30 min from original when I was running WL only and not 24/7. I now have the Envoy to connect 24/7 and wish it was at 15 min or perhaps 10 but difficult to change now.

I've set mine to 10 min after initially running it at 30 min for the first couple of days.
Seemed like a good compromise all round considering log sizes, accuracy etc and I also can be away for up to 17 days before I have to rope someone into downloading my 'precious' data for me. :D

I guess, that im never away more than 8 days ( if at one point i will be I guess I can change it ) so every 5 mins might be good for me

So my question is what ever you set your unit to log at you wont miss out on anything like highs, lows across the board... Records ect.

Cheers guys, sorry this is dragging on

As I understand, the station's logger maintains the high, low, total rain etc. within the set logging interval. You will just have more records logged by a shorter interval. The same happens with the interval of your Cumulus data records, which is reommended to be set the same as the station logger interval.
