I completely understand your thoughts about a support point of view. If you put an option in the configure station window which only pops up when people select Davis and usb, most people would never see it. If you were to tackle it, I could maybe write a new page in the help file explaining what has happened if Cumulus shuts down automatically. Of course, this would be subject to your vetting and editing.

I'd just make it an ini-file only setting.

I see the quandry; Cumulus stops for no apparent reason. Your hidden option is probably the best fix then, only those who need to know about it, need know.

It's midnight here and I'm to be up at 6 am, thank you for your time and trouble tonight Steve. I'll be back tomorrow night.

Ben

Getting the 32701 error trying to connect to VP plus #6161 with firmware Rev B April 24, 2002. It is using a serial connection and weatherlink 5.9.3 shows it connected on Com1 at 9600bps. We shut down weatherlink and try to connect via cumulus on serial com1 and get the error. Does it need to connect at 19,200bps or does that matter?

When Cumulus tells the DLL to open the com port, it tells it to use 19200, so I assume it needs to be set to that speed.

Would having the VP set to 9600 cause a 32701 error?

I would imagine it might, yes, as the DLL would probably be unable to connect to it (-32701 is a 'communication error'). I don't know why I hard-coded the speed, I must have assumed that everyone used 19200. Or perhaps it's just that I use 19200 and it's something I've never got around to changing.

Hi Steve,

I am new to the group and have read thru this topic, some made some sense to me.

I am getting the error 32701, have the davis vantage pro and purchased the davis usb to serial cable since my old computer only has one serial port ( for the monitor).

I have tried comm ports 1 -4 and nothing is working. I have some computer skills so I would ask for some help to get the system running. In all honesty, some of the above computer info does not make sense.

Thanks,

Keith

Do you mean that you have a serial Weatherlink but you are connecting it to a USB port using a converter?

It's unlikely that a virtual serial port would be in that range. If you don't know how to find out the correct number, you could run the Weatherlink software and get it to auto-detect the correct serial port.

Hi Steve,

I need to correct my info. 1) I do not have Weatherlink software (from Davisnet dot com) due to the cost ($295.00). That will be a few months to a year off in our budget. 2) I have the cable (female phone jack, phone cable to serial connection) that came with the wx station. I purchased the davis cable (serial port to usb) thinking it would work before I read up on your web page. If the Davis cable is useless to me without the software, I have no problem doing so. Unless you have a better idea. :)

So I am presuming that I will need to purchase the Weatherlink software in the future in order for the wx station to be able to talk to your software on my computer. A friend of mine suggested your software to connect the wx station to my computer since it was free.

My apologies to you Steve for not posting that info previously.

I will be reading up on the info for the web page, since there is much to review on.

Thank you for your time.

Keith

You don't need the Weatherlink software to use Cumulus (other than changing the station logger interval). But that's not an issue anyway as the software is effectively free. It's the hardware which is supplied with the Weatherlink software which you need, as otherwise you can't actually connect your station to your PC. (Someone has developed a 'home made' interface, there are threads in the forum about this).

But if you don't have the WL hardware, I don't understand what the cable is that you have, or what you're plugging it into?

Keith, your explanation is quite confusing!

Are you writing about this USB-to-Serial (DB9) cable (part #08434)? If that is indeed the cable you are writing about, well it is completely useless unless you (eventually) purchase the Davis Instruments WeatherLink Serial Port adaptor (part #06510SER) - the cable cannot be used with any other adaptors - oh, and the WeatheLink software cannot be used with that USB-to-Serial (DB9) cable.

Unless you get one of the adaptors sold by Davis Instruments (ie: the WeatherLink Serial Port, the WeatherLink USB or the WeatherLinkIP - all of which include the WeatherLink software in their product box), your Vantage Pro weather station (the console) cannot be connected to a computer...

Ray,

Thank you for your info. I was getting lost when I was trying to be creative and get the the software running. I will be returning the Davis wx cable this week.

I have an old gateway computer that is used as my wx computer and it only has one serial port on it for the monitor. I will get with my computer tech and see if I can get a second serial port card that will work with the wx cable.

Thanks for the feedback Ray.

Keith

Keith, before you buy a serial port adapter card, check (or have someone check) the mainboard/motherboard inside that computer - a serial port header (usually a black connector on the mainboard/motherboard) might be available and, if there is a serial port header, all that is needed is a pre-made cable with a connector at one end and a DB9 (mounted on a bracket) at the other end: Image

Keith I am not too sure you understand what is (will be) needed to connect your weather station (the console) - all the Davis weather stations need a WeatherLink adapter - either a WeatherLink Serial Port adapter (part #06510SER), or a WeatherLink USB adapter (part #06510USB) or a WeatherLinkIP adapter (part #06555) (NOT RECOMMENDED) - the adapter is NOT JUST A CABLE but a data logger, a small processor+memory storing weather data even when the adapter is either not connected to your PC or when your PC is switched off.

Something else that you may need to be aware of, Keith, is that the port that you plug your monitor into is not a serial port. If your PC is quite old and definitely doesn't have a serial port available, it is quite likely that it does have a header as Ray describes. In fact, if it is quite old, it's strange that it doesn't have a serial port with a socket already available.
