If you're not bothered about losing some data for VWS then stop it, install the Silicon driver utility and install Cumulus. Your weather data will be starting from scratch with Cumulus so you cannot continue to run VWS. But if you run VirtualVP you can run both programs and keep those 5 years of data.

That's a good point. So if I decide to use VirtualVP do I still need to install the Silicon driver utility, or does VirtualVP include that functionality itself as well?

Ooops, never mind. Looks like VirtualVP is no longer available. I get this message from the website:
Quote:
Because of demands on my time related to health issues of a family member, I am temporarily removing StartWatch and VirtualVP from being available for download, and removing the registration pay buttons

The biggest issue if you don't install VirtualVP is the data in the data logger. Once you've downloaded it into Cumulus you can't download the same data into VWS.
You can. The station doesn't delete data when it's been downloaded, and doesn't keep track of which software downloaded what and when. You can repeatedly download the same logger data into different programs.

I would have answered your earlier question first but in the light on this one it changes your options. You're limited to one software package now. The Silicon driver is still needed as that will convert your PC to be able to assign a COM port to Cumulus. Without it you're stuck with USB but it's been 3 years since I setup my system so my memory is a little vague on whether I tried Cumulus with the USB option.

Given you cannot run both VWS and Cumulus you now have to decide how to proceed. You won't lose anything by trying Cumulus and if it doesn't work out just revert to VWS.

Thanks Steve. I didn't think that was possible but Moose's options are now limited because of the situation with VVP.

Thanks Steve. So in essence all I would have to do is shut down Cumulus for a while and fire up VWS at least once every couple of weeks to keep it up to date?

Well, I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

Tried to start my install of Cumulus.

First thing was to run the CP210x Serial Converter.

Right off the bat I get the "cannot find manufacturing.dll" error

I did remember reading about this, but in all the old threads I've found (here and on other boards) plenty of people talk about it - but NO ONE OFFERS A WORKABLE SOLUTION.

Been flailing over this for a couple hours now.

I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel for good.

Oh, and did I mention I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

[/color]OK, disregard my last tantrum. I actually got this thing to work! I was just about to give up, but stumbled upon this solution in one last gasp of desparation!

Steve - here is a step by step description of converting a Davis VP2 from USB to serial mode. Feel free to add/share this anywhere you see fit.

1. Disregard any information about downloading a CP210X driver from Davis or directly from Silicon Labs. This is a pathway to insanity.
2. Go to the Davis website and download the latest version of the WeatherLink Updater at: http://www.davisnet.com/support/weather ... _sftwr.asp
3. Disconnect the Data Logger
4. Run the updater program
5. The Updater will install the "manufacturing.dll" and the CP210X Serial Converter
6. Reconnect the Data Logger
7. Go to your Start Menu and run the "CP210X USB to Serial Converter" in the WeatherLink Group
8. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
9. Click on Ports
10. Click on Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge
11. Select properties
12. Click on Port Settings
13. Set to 19200 (if not already)
14. Note the Com Port number also
15. Procede with Cumulus Install

Note. If you don't know your data logger Archive Interval Setting, run the WL setup screen to find/set it to the desired interval. Unfortunately, if you change the setting it will flush the Archive Memory. I guess this is the price of forgetfulness.

Updated per the other thread. We now know this method will NOT work if you have never installed a registerd copy of WeatherLink Before.

Hope this helps.

Now on to configuting Cumulus...

Well done Moose. I'm pleased it worked for you. As I said, it was nearly 3 years ago so my memory was a little muddy on the precise procedure I used.

Time to change your handle to Happy Moose! :D

Congrats on your persistence; I am about to embark on the same journey. I've been screwing around with my new WL and datalogger since receiving it, yesterday...to no avail, aka working with Cumulus.
Are there any addendums to your instructions? Still happy with it?
Many thanks for breaking trail.

Yes, quite happy with my new toy!

I've got both Cumulus and VWS running on the same Comm Port (not simultaneously of course). I usually keep Cumulus running all day and just shut it down long enough to start VWS and update all of it's pages.

Most of my time so far has been setting up my website. Stll has a few bugs, but I'm slowly getting there. The next main task is to set up the realtime gauges, and get my webcams online:

http://www.ak-image.com/weather/index.htm

Where are you having trouble? Do you have Weather Link or VWS running properly? Once those are working, you should only need to configure Cumulus to use the same Comm Port.

You definitely need to get it working with WL - in serial mode - first, and then it should work with Cumulus with the same settings.

No, I can't get WL to work in serial mode. I've deleted and re-installed about 5 times, now...(REALLY!)...setting it up initially with serial mode but then it requires a COM port...that I can't seem to find on a USB computer. I'm thinking that that's where the silicon whatchamacallit comes in?
