I'm looking at burrowing a RM Young TB to try out on my VP2. The advantage to this is that it tips at 0.1mm instead of 0.2mm. I know the console will display incorrectly (never look at it) but is it possible to tell Cumulus that each tip detected is now only 0.1 and not 0.2?

Put 0.5 in the rainfall multiplier calibration setting.

How does this interface with the VP2?

Uses a reed, same as the VP2. So simply unplug the VP2 gauge, wire the new one with something like cat5 and fit an RJ11 (i think RJ11's have a different name in the states).

The bonus is it's more accurate and can be easily remotely mounted.

The one in the link comes with built in heater but, there is a cheaper version without.

Thanks Steve.

Awesome. Thanks! Maybe I will add this to my future upgrade list. I'm getting ready to wire up my RM Young 5103 anemometer to my VP2 for better accuracy, so it only makes sense to add the rain sensor someday.

I'll obviously need the heated version!

be sure to let us know how it works!

Is it just me, not that I'm complaining, but is it not a little odd that Davis would develop a product to encourage you to use another manufacturers product?Image

I gues I never looked at it that way. I kinda of figured it was like the whole Microsoft vs Apple thing. The more you open your syetm up to use with other products, the more business it generates. Anyway, I don't think I would say they are encouriging the use of other manufacturer's products. They certainly aren't promoting it very well. Very few people seem to even know about it.

While looking through the console set up today, I found the tip size screen actually has options for 0.1mm / 0.2mm and 0.1inch.

The manual has this to say:
Quote:
Note: See the Integrated Sensor Suite Installation Manual for instructions on installing the
metric rain adapter. The 0.1mm setting does not provide correct rain measurements
with either the standard measurement or the metric adapter installed in the rain
bucket and should not be used.

Any one know any more about the 0.1mm option? Although the manual states not accurate with the VP2 bucket options I guess if it the RM bucket is connected and calibrated at 0.1mm the screen on the console should read correctly.
