Now we have crazy December weather in the UK

Post by RayProudfoot »

Following on from crazy November UK weather we now have crazy December UK weather.

Max yesterday was 14.9°C - a new December record for this station. The first seven days of December are 5.7°C above average. How long can this last?
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

And of course we shouldn't forget the poor people of Cumbria where a storm deposited 14" (314mm) of rain on Saturday creating a new UK rainfall record. Not a record I would want.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

No. Did you see the pictures and video of Malham Cove? It has (had?) a waterfall coming over the top, by some reckoning this is the first time that has happened in 400 years!

Hmm, my edit ended up being a double post for some reason.

Yes, it was on the news last night and in the paper this morning. One of the locations for Harry Potter films apparently. I imagine in a couple of days it will have dried up again.

Interesting day's weather. Pressure dropping very rapidly this morning but with a big temp rise as the rain arrived from the south.

Then this evening as the rain is pushed south by the cold air from the north we get pressure rising very rapidly but the temperature dropping away very quickly.

If things don't change my average lowest temperature for December (5.8) will exceed the value for November! (5.7) :?

Hi the UK :)

We are doing a rainfall comparison down here in NZ with the UK.
I have searched through the UK sites on the Cumulus topsites which has given me a good indication of total year rainfall plus Longest dry and wet period.
What I am unable to find is the total dry days and total wet days for the year.

Would one of you be so kind as to look under Cumulus - View - This Year
Bottom right is the number of Rain and Dry days.

Sorry to piggy back off this topic but it seemed a good place to ask :)

Cheers
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I import the dayfile.txt into an Access database and perform quite a bit of analysis on it.

For 2014 Cheadle Hulme had 200 days where more than 0.01" of rain was recorded. I use that threshold to exclude dew but of course a few genuine days of rain traces will also be excluded. The dry days would then be 365-200= 165.

So far this year (to 14/12/2015) there have been 168 days of rain.

Hope that helps. :)
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray,

Yes excellent. Thank you :)
The UK Rainfall total for 2015 appears between 650 to 860mm
Considering the high amount of rain days this is not a lot of rain. So interesting comparisons we are finding.

btw having that google map on your home page is a neat idea. I knew exactly where I was instead of having to google.
Surprisingly many do not even have their Country location, especially on their banners, so difficult when researching.

Thanks again Ray

Cheers
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

<<The UK Rainfall total for 2015 appears between 650 to 860mm>>

Rainfall will be much higher in hilly parts of the country. Not sure if recent bad weather was reported in NZ but the Lake District suffered very badly from Storm Desmond back on 5 December. A new daily rainfall record of 14" (350mm) was broken. Parts of the Lake District and Capil Curig in North Wales (Snowdonia) receive huge amounts.

This Met Office graphic might help... http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/ra ... -in-the-uk

I don't see the point of running a weather station and not showing people where you live. I had a visitor the other week who was curious about my station. He located me from that Google map. I very much doubt someone is going to nick my weather station! :D
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

For me, close to Ray my 'wet day' count is as follows (I have included 'one tip' 0.2mm as rain days, as I think more of them are due to rain than dew)

Code: Select all

2010 198
2011 227
2012 241
2013 188
2014 226
2015 203 (so far)

So far this year, 223 wet days, 128 dry.
Total rainfall: 646mm (20yr average: 690.7mm)

December 2015 is already the warmest I've recorded by a large margin, but contains only 4th warmest December day.
