How long after .01" rain to wait until next .01" for storm

Post by TheBridge »

Reference website: https://climate.tommueller.com/

A viewer of our local DAVIS/Cumulus website noticed that at 18:16-hrs we had .01" rain and nothing more until 23:26-hrs ( so about 5 hours later on the same day) it began to actually rain, and it rained from then on until the next day. On the second day the viewer noted that the STORM TOTAL was correct value for the DAILY rain measurements of both days minus .01" ...meaning the .01" that occurred at 18:16-hrs of the first day appears not to have been included in the SOTRM total.

Looking at this (admittedly rare) situation above... how long after a .01" rain is there before it is not included in a STORM total?
This is understandably a small point but nevertheless interesting one as it says something of the point of when a STORM event really begins.

Hi Bridgeman,

According to Davis, the definition for a Storm Event is as follows:
The rain total of the last rain event. It takes two tips of the rain spoon to begin a storm event and 24 hours without rain to end a storm event.
Therefore the Storm Event wasn't triggered until 23:26-hrs which is why the one at 18:16-hrs is not included.

The question is, how long can it be between those first two tips for it to registered as an "event"?

Mark,
Yes, that is the question indeed.
What is the max time span from tip-1 to tip-2 (at which time it starts to really rain) for tip-1 to be included in the [STORM] event rain total?

Understandably, this might be a question that only Davis can answer?

To all Davis based weather station users, an answer from Davis Support…

“ The storm event starts when there has been two tips within 15 minutes of each other, it ends when there has been 24 hours with no tips. So if you get one tip, then nothing for four hours, the first tip is not part of the storm event. ”
