User map updated

Post by TNETWeather »

I've just spent the better part of 3 hours working through the entries in the User maps. This is the first work through in some time and a number of no longer valid sites were removed.

I first attempted to adjust and correct sites that had invalid coordinates provided so that they no longer were (typically) in the middle of the ocean somewhere.

I then went through each URL to check to see if sites were still active, still using Cumulus etc...

A number of sites have been removed. Most of the reasons for removal were:

o URL no longer valid. Easily the vast number of sites removed.
o URL points to a website that is dead/not updating/or not a weather site. This included a fairly common occurrence of sites that were no longer being updated.
o One virus attack website was removed.
o URL points to a weather site that no longer uses Cumulus.

Please note, that the submissions are provided by the users, and in many cases it is hard to determine if the information is correct or not. This is especially true with coordinates and I have no way of truly knowing if a site is misplaced or not. Obviously if it is sitting in the middle of the ocean, it is easy to figure its not on a boat, but many of the updates are done by Cell phone which is somewhat limited in confirming the data.

Same goes for country location. If the user says their site is in Scotland and it actually somewhere else in the UK, hopefully someone else will send a note indicating that. It is a bit weird, but some people apparently don't know where they are located.

One thing that was interesting was that most of the older sites were still using Cumulus. Only a few of the first say 100 sites added were no longer using the software.

I now show as both "Komoka, ON" and "Mylemans Komoka Weather" after I had submitted what I intended to be a change only for my current URL. Changing the "Komoka, ON" link to www.komokaweather.com (which now shows as www.komokaweather.com/weather) and deleting the duplicated "Mylemans Komoka Weather" would be my preference. Sorry for the confusion.

Kevin,
Mind adding my location and site to the map when you have the time?

It looks like your request has gone missing; Kevin does the updates very quickly usually, and I get copies of the submissions, and I can't find yours. If you want to repeat your details here I'll add you manually.

I need your co-ordinates, so I can put you in the correct place on the map :)

It is a lot easier if you just fill out the form at the bottom of the usermap since it will convert the degree format of your coordinates to the necessary decimal format for the map files.

More than 520 sites have done that now. There are currently 464 active sites. Almost 99% of which were submitted via the form

I assumed he'd already done that but the email had gone missing.

Sorry about that. I thought Kevin had to manually put my information in to the map. I didn't scroll down all the way to the bottom of the page. I'll go ahead and add it.
