After a brief respite from the unusually cold conditions of late November and early December the UK is due to be hit with a blast of Arctic air on Thursday that promises significant amounts of snow.

Here's the forecast synoptic chart from the Met Office for noon GMT Thursday. It should be very interesting to see the effect as the cold front moves south. As you can see the source of the cold air is over northern Greenland. Interesting.

The NH chart shows the airstream coming right 'over' the North Pole from the Northern Pacific regions.

It could be an interesting spell but may not last that long, at least in its coldest phase.

The polar blast will be quite shortlived as you suggest. But with winds now forecast to be from the NW my area could be hit with some heavy snow showers once the front passes through.

Looking at the chart you provided it looks like the coldest areas will be to the east of the UK. Bad news for the Netherlands, Belgium and western Germany.
